This is a known bug in the Apple photo picker - which is the standard (and only !) way to select a picture from your library or take a photo with the camera. Also, it downscales your photos to the screen resolution of your iPhone, which is not desirable.
In version 1.1 of LifeCast we're changing how we handle photos - they will no longer be cropped or make square, and they will be upto 800 pixels square in size. The downside to this is currently that you won't be able to 'crop and zoom' when selecting the photo, but we think the trade off is worth it.
1.1 should be available sometime early August, although there are delays getting things pushed out onto the App Store at the moment, so we can't promise anything.
