Slife and Productivity - Share Your Thoughts
We recently attended the first official Information Overload Research Group (IORG) event in NYC. Lots of discussions about how to address the problem of too much information in an age of limited time and attention.
More details about the event are in the Slife Labs blog:

Do you use Slife to manage your productivity and keep you focused? Do you try to stay on task despite the temptation of your email and fun web sites being a click away.
How do you think we can improve Slife to help you deal with this problem? Is this even a problem for you? Share your thoughts!

Inappropriate? This is exactly why I use Slife - as a tool to self-monitor. It's a key feedback loop supporting my efforts at using my time and focusing my attention the way I really intend to use it.
My main work at the moment is a big writing project, and my time is almost entirely self-structured. Which makes it all too easy and dangerous to let things slide. Easily seeing how I really spend my time is invaluable.
One idea: A user-defined alert or notification feature based on goals would be a fantastic tool in managing attention. I might set alerts that help me to either limit time on a particular activity, or to encourage me to spend more time on a particular activity.
So for a limit example, say I define a goal to use email for less than 30 minutes per day, I could also set an alert to pop up when I have reached that goal, or when 10 minutes remain before reaching that goal, etc. As an encouragement example, say I have a goal to write for 6 hours per day. I set an alert that tells me when I'm halfway there. Or that reminds me every hour of my workday what percentage of that goal I've completed, and what remains.
I have no idea whether this would be straightforward or difficult to implement, but I'd love to see it! (And thanks and congratulations on this great software. I'm spreading the word).

Gregor, I use growl (http://growl.info) and it can interact with slife and does notify me when I have reached a goal. It doesn't do the "10 minutes remain" bit which I, too, would love to see. -
Inappropriate?I agree with gregor. It would be great to have Slife perform an action when a goal is reached such as play a sound or execute an Applescript action. Slife's Growl notifications are too subtle for me and I often miss them.
-
Inappropriate? That's a good idea. It's something we can enable through a preferences settings too. In general, how do you like the goals feature? Are you using? Is it working for you?
-
Inappropriate? It's nice to be able to keep track of how often I achieve my goals, but I wish Slife could play a more active role in helping me achieve them. An option for Slife to periodically tell me how long until I reach my goal or the progress I've made towards reaching my goals would be great.
-
Inappropriate?I do agree. We've been thinking of ways to help people "stay on track" when it comes to their productivity/efficiency, and not just let them know when they haven't reached their goals.
