Way to group web pages by domain?
Is there a way to group web pages by domain? For example, I use Google Reader to read my blogs, and I'd like to get an idea of how much time I spend each day reading blogs.
Unfortunately, at the moment with Slife 2.0, I seem to get dozens of different entries for Google Reader, one for "Google Reader (34)", another for "Google Reader (95)", etc., since Google Reader uses the title of the document to indicate the number of unread items. I've noticed that other services, such as Gmail, do the same thing.
There was discussion elsewhere about using regular expressions to group related documents. That could be really useful, but I think doing this automatically for web page domains is something many people would use fairly frequently.

Inappropriate? This is definitely something on our radar, since as you noticed, the data Slife compiles could be a lot more useful. And if we can make it work automatically, even better!
-
Inappropriate? We try to come and participate as much as possible. It's a great way for us to find out how people are using the app, which features are popular, etc. Please keep the questions/complaints/feedback coming!
-
Inappropriate?Indeed, if I could group all urls of the form "http://mail.google.com/*" it would make for good "Checking Email" goals. =)
-
I agree! -
Inappropriate? This feature is absolutely, totally critical in order for slife to be useful for me. I need to track everything at my company site as work-related, everything at facebook as "social networking," etc. Is there a way to do this now, or an ETA for this feature being supported?
-
Inappropriate? You can do this now using the "Activities" feature.
Check the help guides for some more info on this feature and how to set them up:
http://www.slifelabs.com/slife/guide/mac
http://www.slifelabs.com/slife/guide/win
You can create an activity called "social networking" and associate it with every "facebook.com" page that you visit. Make sure that you check the "Fetch URLs and additional data from supported applications" under Slife Preferences>Tracking" too.
Let me know if that's enough. Otherwise I can help you step by step. -
Inappropriate? It's no good: there are too many URLs. I want to get everything at facebook.com in one fell swoop. In addition, the popup for associating pages with activities doesn't work: it shows only the first 14 pages, with no scroll bar or other way to see any pages added after that.
-
You don't need to specify every single URL individually and associate with an activity that way. When you create an activity with "facebook.com", any URL you visit that contains "facebook.com" will be associated with the activity you created. -
Oh yes, can you post here or send us (support at slife labs) a screenshot of the activity editor window? There should be a scrollbar, and the window should resize too. Something is up! -
Not trying to move the goalposts here, but a number of sites I use for the same activity are subdomains of a common domain--such as accounting.example.com, contracts.example.com, mgmt.example.com, etc. It would be extremely handy if all of these could be captured by associating example.com with the activity. (And dont forget subsubdomains, like demo.accounting.example.com...)
However you slice it, the 14 page limit set by the app's lack of a scroll bar is a problem. It would be incredibly powerful if we rethought this to be something other than a checklist. Perhaps think of activities as folders or playlists into which URLs can be placed from the "Web & Documents" page? -
Regarding URL grouping, when you specify a string under "web & docs" (in the activity editor), Slife tries to find whatever you entered (e.g. example.com) as a substring of the URL you are visiting. So it should work for domain.example.com or www.example.com/example.html. -
Regarding URL grouping, Slife tries to match strings and substrings. So, for example.com, it should match not only domain.example.com but also example.com/foo.html -
Inappropriate?Len, you might want to try RescueTime. I've switched, and it does "the right thing" out of the box.
Apologies for referencing a competitor on your board, but I felt like it might be helpful to give an example of how I envision this feature working.
Cheers,
Mike -
Inappropriate?RescueTime is a great product from what I've seen. I haven't used it extensively but seems to work well. If it works for you, great!
-
Wow, ok, that's pretty bad. Thanks for the screenshot. We are not seeing that here, but we will try to replicate it. -
Inappropriate?I like how you can associate domain urls, but it's hard to know which websites have already been associated without them being marked somehow in the web and documents pane. that would be a cool feature! Also, if they could automatically show up grouped by domain in the web and documents pane, that would be great too. :)
