some quick suggestions/wishes for future versions
I am not a coder at all, so I have no clue if my suggestions are hard to implement or not. But I am working professionally with photography/graphics software all the time, so this is a user's viewpoint, regarding usability.
So my suggestions would be:
1. What about a "smooth scrolling" (like in Pictomio, GPUviewer, Photoshop CS4 and so on)? Also it would be great if one could have the program refresh (rebuild) the thumbnails on demand, since they're rather blurry when showing them big in the thumbnail view. The "refresh button" does not do this yet.
2. I'd love to see multi-monitor support; I'd like to put the viewer on my right monitor, for example, and the thumbnail view on the left one. The viewer would update whenever I choose a new picture.
3. RAW-support is a must for professionals. Could possibly done using components of the free DCRaw project.
4. When is the search function going to ready? I'd love to see the possibility of complex searches ("value_a AND value_b"; "value_a AND value_b NOT value_C"; "value_a OR value_b AND value_c" and so on).
5. A possibility to compare several (say at least 6 at once) pictures on one viewer screen (by choosing more than one in the thumbnail view) and rate them as "keeper" or "trash" (for example like with Adobe Bridge CS3).
6. DO you plan multi-language support? My language is German, and while I can get along with English GUIs, it's so much easier with an interface in my own language of course. You might have all strings in an XML-file so users could translate themselves and upload or send you these translations.
OK, just my five cents. The program really looks promising and could be a real free alternative to ACDseePro one day. Looking forward to any updates! Thanks for making this program free!

Inappropriate?ruceb,
Good to see you here on GetSatisfaction from the Snapact review on Freewaregenius. As a bit of a side note, I have to say that Freewaregenius.com does have some great insight on some little known but excellent free software. Samer does a good job.
All of your comments have merit, and we will be keeping track of them for future product enhancement. In particular, the thumbnail refresh and perhaps RAW support stand out as common user requests, meaning we will likely focus on those initially.
Thank you for the (potential) comparison to ACDSeePro - it's quite flattering. We think that ACD Systems has made some great software, so thank you for mentioning us in the same sentence!
We have a bit of a path for Snapact that we fight hard to stay on - keeping the product and sharing service simple and easy, yet functional. It is easy to add functionality; it's difficult to add functionality and maintain that simplicity and ease of use though. Usability is extremely important to us.
Keep the feedback coming!
Thank you,
Kramer
I’m happy to help!

Inappropriate?Hi,
Search does have some advanced features. For example you can use these keywords to limit your search -
rating:
filename:
keyword:
for rating you can use < > and =
so as an example to return all images with a rating of 5 you would enter
rating:=5
Also, raw support ( very rudimentary ) will be in the next release.
George.

Inappropriate? Thanks Kramer and George for your responses!
As to my ACDSee comparison: Of course they've made a great software. But -- I think that there exactly happened what you are trying to avoid: The software is not bloated, not really easy to use anymore. Plus: Direct image comparison is such an important feature for every photo professional, but except Adobe Bridge CS3, any application I've seen is lacking a good way to deal with this.
Hhm, I don't really know which version of Snapact I'm working with, because I have not found a way to display its version info. Anyway, I tried George's suggestions for the search field like so: "keyword:family", "keyword: family", "keyword: "family" and so on, but I have no luck. Obviously, it's only searching inside the physical folder just displayed and not throughout the entire database? But it's well possibly that I am doing something wrong here.
Just one last thing if I may: IMHO multi-monitor support comes directly after RAW-support, regarding importance of features. Do you plan to add this some day?
Thanks for your efforts!

Specifically, the "keyword:" advanced search option searches against the Tag metadata field.
If you single-click on a photo thumbnail and look in the Info pane at the bottom of the Browser window, you'll notice a few bits of photo information like Filename, Title, Description, Tags, etc. 'Tags' are something that you can assign to a photo to further describe and organize your photos. For instance, you might assign the tags 'water', 'blue', 'boat' to a photo containing a boat in the water on a bright blue sunny day. Tags are also useful when your photos are shared online in your Snapact account for browsing around photo collections.
We will be making it easier to use this searching feature in the future by using common terms - for instance, "tag: blue" instead of "keyword: blue". That should make things easier.
I hope this helps,
Kramer -
Thanks for your explanation! I've now noticed what my fault was: I only assigned images to albums, not to tags. It didn't occur to me to do so, since there is only an "album" panel, but none for "tags" (or am I missing something here)? I intuitively used drag'n'drop to assign albums (instead of tags) to some images. Tagging some images manually showed me that of course they are easily found then :-) So maybe there's room for the improvement of tags management... -
Inappropriate?ruceb,
Points for us to take note of and follow up on:
- look to improve the advanced search feature
- look to improve the way we do multi-monitor support (browser and viewer at same time, perhaps)
- look to add some sort of direct image comparison feature
- add in an easy way for users to identify the version information
At this point, we are collecting suggestions, and I have to say that your suggestions are valid. That being said, it isn't possible for me to say right now whether we will be including specific functionality or not in the Snapact Photo Manager.
We make note of and review user suggestions regularly, so please do not think that we are dismissing your ideas! It is a part of our strategy to keep the Snapact Photo Manager simple yet usable.
Thank you very much for your detailed input!
Kramer
I’m happy that great users provide feedback!

Once again, thanks a lot, I appreciate your fast reply :-) I totally understand you can't make any promises about the implementation of certain features. I'm looking forward to the next release(s)... -
Inappropriate?Ruceb,
I just noticed your 6th point about multi-language - whether I missed it completely the first time, or you added it after... I am sorry. Let me try to answer it briefly here.
Our user base is just beginning to grow - we want to support everyone and their language, but as we're just beginning, that isn't entirely feasible yet. I do like your idea about community-based language translation, so we will definitely give it some more thought.
I have to admit that I was quite surprised to see so many people of different languages and cultures interested in Snapact - I'm happy to see the interest, but it does indeed put a new emphasis on supporting multiple languages. It's on the list of things to do, of course.
Take a look at the Snapact blog - I try to put up a weekly top 10 country list. Maybe you could improve Germany's standings...? ;)
Thank you,
Kramer
I’m confident the world wants more Snapact.

Again, Thanks for your replay :-) Well, for me it's not that important to have the software in German -- it's more a question of convenience. But I know some people for whom it's a real issue since their English is not good enough (not that mine was that good, haha). I think you could broaden your user base a lot by localizing Snapact. But still -- it's doubtlessly more important to get all the features up and running and have the software where you want it to be functionally before thinking about localization.
Best regards!
