ACTION NEEDED BY SOCIALGO
To the management of SocialGO:
In discussing the platform amongst other SocialGO network operators, we have decided that we must state some concerns.
Primarily, we are concerned with the lack of transparency about upcoming features / releases. Other SaaS companies (salesforce.com, Amazon) let their customers know what is coming in the next releases, and give a relatively firm release date. Additionally, with the departure of Widget Laboratory, we trust that you have staff dedicated to getting the API to version 1.0.
Additionally, we’ll use this posting to consolidate a list of feature requests that have already been mentioned in GetSatisfaction.com/SocialGo:
• Group chat
• Multiplayer games
• Virtual gifts
• Friend activity feeds (customizable)
• More AJAX
• More interoperability (RSS in/out and per-user RSS)
Social Networks have set certain expectations for the user experience. We don’t feel we are able to meet (or exceed) those expectations given the current feature set on SocialGO.
We will be very happy to work hand-in-hand with SocialGO on updates to the platform. However, without upgrades, our networks will continue to slowly die. Once our memberships dwindle too much, we will be forced to migrate our networks to another service.

There is so much stuff happening at the moment to help you with your networks. I am really excited about what we are up to, here is a run-down.
Coming very soon are :
a) Group Chat as requested
b) New Contact importer with Social network inviter as well
c) Facebook Connect
d) API Documentation and a few methods which are currently missing from the specs and effectively bring it up to version 1.0
e) Zamanta content suggestor for blogging on your networks
f) Time booking widget
(by very soon, read within the next 4 weeks some coming in less than 10 days)
Following that we have :
g) Better member level controls
h) Additional translation of errors and emails
i) Additional emails on member actions
j) Improved content sharing for your members
k) Conversion to streamlined plain-text emails
l) Further integration with Google connect and other services
m) Improved content management on your networks
n) Improved RSS feeds for members, member blogs, forums
As the roadmap firms up we will continue to do posts on the owners network.
We are making great progress getting additional widget developers on board who are mulling things such as user ranking systems, video broadcast widgets and a number of other things which will add loads of value to your networks and keep your users on there.
Our development is driven hugely by what you guys want and need so please do keep in regular contact. Perhaps if you could suggest in order your top 10 features and that would be hugely helpful.

The purpose of this thread is for you to tell us what you need.
Your particular network requires features which others do not. Suggestions for friends for example requires a large social graph which most networks do not. E-Gifts and E-Cards again are not right for a large number of networks and are hardly used on many social networks which have them today.
Related videos and friend activity feeds are perfectly doable changes and if they are a highly requested can be worked into the timeline.
This is the forum for talking about these things so that should be the spirit that this discussion should be had in. We will consider all suggestions!

Inappropriate?everyone wants related videos , friend chat , friend activity ajax (comments) and multiplayer games , at least that .Send me a website from s.g. that can have hundred, i will not say thousand, just hundred, members online , i think there is no website , and the reason is all above that i have said, you have great services but without all above there is no luck for someone to create a website with hundred members online and i want to have hundred members online , if someone wants 5-10-50 persons online you have great services , how my website can have 400 persons online ? with this video chat without friend chat and anyone can write anything without my control of the logs ? and any one can talk to any one ? how i will find my friends in 400 members online? , without interact reply on comments ? without having all my members a multiplayer game to play ?
i think they will go to other networks that will have and their friends and their multiplayer games and their interact comments and the choice to talk with their friends or with every person they prefer , and to send card and gifts, and to create quiz , i think all of these reasons is enough someone to go to another website and stay . i dont say other features i just said the basic features , and features that almost everyone wants .
I have a very beautiful and great website thanks for that , but with 5-10-20-30-40 members online , and have no luck for more .

yes i need all of this and not only me and a lot of other people , and i dont have a remote pc to set up by myself . and i have a social network website , and a social network website in 2009 must have all this i said , because if i dont have all of this ,i dont have a social network, in 2009 is there any way someone to stay to your website when he cant see where is his friends and how to talk to them and cant see their activity ? why someone to log in to s.g. website ? to see all activity of whole world :P this does not care anyone and if you disagree look some great websites with s.g. that has thousand members and no one online . -

We all want a lot of Widgets, but as Alex says, the need is very individual. The network I'm running is not all interested in any kind of games, dating, e-gift or e-cards.
We need classified ad tool, job posting tool.
I think we can cathegorize our needs in 3 major classes:
1. Basic functionality and a robust systems. Unfortunately, the basic system is not robust. e-mails fail, log in fails, news widgets don't work... there's a number of small basic problems to fix.
2. A load of widgets in all kind of cathegories. Let's hope SG can attract several widget makers with different profiles.
3. Transparency!!! Please SocalGo, 3 sources of information is 2 to much. And when things go wrong, tell us!! When W-L left, tell us what happend. You didn't pay their bills, you had a fight at the pub or they ran away with your money? I don't care, but tell us. Don't ask me to check my spam setting when your e-mail servers are malfunctioning. Give us a roadmap, not various blog post that don't match. Tell us about your team, your company...
In other words, SG get yourself a marketing guy.

I agree with many things you said but, ididnt mean that everyone needs to his network all the things i said ,but if someone wants to have a social network website with many members on line, all the feature that rob announce is right , and dont forget that many s.g. website owners agree with this announce ;-)
so i dont care if someone doesnt need these features , because maybe he doesnt want a website with many persons online or he cant understand the meaning of social network .
And don't forget :
the best social networks in the world, at least 10 has at least most of this features , thats my answer to you and to alex ,

How come your saying that there are no networks with 100+ members online at the same time..? Believe me those networks do exist!
Those networks have the same features/widgets as you ( can) have, so new features/widgets will not always be the solution to get many members online and to keep them online..
I do agree that SG needs to bring us more features (widgets) and as far as i know there are many of those in the pipeline.. ( see Alex's list above) As you might know SG is a developing network.. Thats means that there are more things to come ( to develop). We all need to be patient, Yeah i know thats hard sometimes!! But demanding things and forget to be respectful in the tone of messages in this public forum is not the way to get things done...
But heey thats just my opinion.. -

1.) Support for a service like RPX.com. 1 widget per sign-on service will start to get pricey
2.) User management: a mass-recycle function, to expunge members who have left and wipe their content.
3.) Email validation for existing members. If their messages are a hard bounce - don't let them login until they update their email.
4.) Auditing and Reporting - easy setup of reports to be viewed or emailed: "new members this week", "members who cancelled this week", etc.
5.) More granular control for members to publically display information on a private network (like facebook) using a vanity URL. i.e. http://network.com/robby will load the framework for the network and perhaps a thumbnail of the user (if selected by the user)
6.) An externally hosted SocialGo-Status page - showing green/red lights for the systems that make up the hosting environment... i.e. webservers all up, but email is back-logged/down, etc.
7.) A development roadmap: including features, target quarters for release. i.e. Chat: Q3-09
Top Member-Facing Wishes
1.) Familiar chat interface (comet-chat), but also the ability to create/join room-based chat with more than 1 other
2.) More Ajax in interface. Eliminate page refreshes while adding a friend request, or updating status
3.) Allow for selection of displayed users, videos, photos in "featured" blocks, by letting Admins select which items to feature.
4.) Allow individual users to select an RSS feed as their blog source (for those users who have external blogs already)
5.) Allow users (or admins), to rss-enable socialgo-hosted blogs for consumption by external apps (supporting authentication, where required by the setting of the individual network)
6.) Extend the rating system (now available on videos) to photographs, blog entries, etc., and provide a link to the listing of "highest rated blog/video/photo"

I think you misread some things so i'm correcting that ;

If you can back it up that "many" network owners want the same things you want then i'm pretty sure SG will put them higher on their list..
I dont give a dam for quiz and e-cards/gifts.
I have a multi-player section on my network already.
I dont want anything to do with Facebook!
The thing i want the most is a group-chat, and thats coming real soon.

I'm almost a year on the SG platform now, and they always delivered their promises, sometimes it took a bit longer then expected (hoped) but thats life..

Inappropriate?Fantastic to see all your ideas on here and it is great for me to see. My role at SocialGO is try and prioritise things going forward for the development team.
At the moment we are dividing our time in 3 areas. Firstly we are working on the day-to-day bug fixing and general improvements to our systems allowing us to scale the platform as networks get bigger. Secondly we are working on our next version of the core architecture which will allow us to do things which can not currently be done on any social networking platform out there (but is some months off) and thirdly we work on building tools to manage the subscription side to the business. Invoicing, bandwidth logging etc.
I am going to go away and try and distill from your comments here some things which we can deliver to you between now and Christmas. Some thing will have to wait as they are being addressed more fully in our next major version but many of them can be tackled and worked on in the interim.
We are also working on a way to involve you guys far more in the planning stages. News of this will also be making its way to you this week.

Inappropriate?Custom Offline Message With Contact Info, Twitter, & E-Mail Notifications
I'm planning on a very strong marketing and PR campaign in Nov. and Dec. With the outages, which I know to be unplanned, it would be very reassuring to have an offline message than can:
1. Be customized with my site header, theme, and contact information
2. Show server status
3. Send me an email and tweet anytime the site is down
4: Include my twitter widget so I can tweet my own updates
5. Link to an my Twitter account and an email form to request contact info for those visitors I may miss during the offline time.
This would greatly help reduce some of my anxieties. Thanks! -
Inappropriate?SocialGo should focus on server/database/infrastructure redundancy, continuity, and security. Some of the above wishlist features mean nothing compared to the must-have services required to keep our websites operating with little downtime.
With that said, the API is key to site owner scalability for verticle features. However I'll keep my SocialGo demands focused the need for a Service Level Agreement which requires 0.01% downtime or less.

With a reliable SLA and the API intact (and well documented) the SG community can get busy investing time and money into our personal customizations, as well as free and commercial widgets. I was logged in on day one of the Joomla Extension directory, when it had just a few component and module options from the Mambo precursor. Now it's inspiring to see 3624 listings created by the community. -

Also u mentioned translation of emails And errors, I need that but also translation capability for the signup instructions, and the email verification instructions page, payment pending text, and the image verification instructions, in fact why not let us edit the sign up page? And include other info we may need on sign up?

I agree with you, my site is in icelandic and want to be able to translate everything and i also need to be able to set terms for my icelandic network because many people here (specially the older ones) dont know english...
I have problems with my characters on many places on the network and emails and such but have managed to translate alot using the "html editor" but after our sites were down alot of those characters have gone back to symbols and unreadable texts... -
Inappropriate?Friends, I don't think you can expect SocialGO to be a facebook or myspace. While I like most of the features that have been suggested (except the gifts... Ning just did that and it was really annoying) SocialGO is still a young company, just now coming into their own as far as social networking goes. Be patient!
When we decided to use SocialGO as one of our social networks, we evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of a network... and your complaints are some of the things you either had considered when you used SocialGO or should have considered when you moved to SocialGO.
I honestly believe that the guys behind the scenes at SocialGO are working their hardest to provide the best product they can, but it cannot happen over night! I would encourage you to be patient and provide your feedback and suggestions in a constructive manner, as canada.rob did to begin this topic. -
Ning have just made some changes.
They have not added anything apart from that silly gift thing but have removed stuff.
You create a new network then to launch it you clicked invite friends to your network. If you have used it, you will know up came your list of friends across the ning platform. You could select all, or none and just ticked the ones you wanted to invite. I have about 1,000 names on my list, some are on sites I am on, some are on sites I do not know about, and some are on the ning platform but not on any sites.
Ning have removed that, which means I can only contact friends that are on sites
that I am on to invite them to my new network.
I have lost about a third of my friends since I have no means of contacting them.
To invite friends now, you have to know their email address.
Without the invite facility, networks are not able to grow.
Not so long ago, you could sign up with ning and then you could surf the ning platform for a network to join. Ning have shut that down as well.
You could sign in to ning and view your friends list. That is shut down as well.
SocialGo can be the ning of the future.To do that, SocialGo needs our help.
Let's stop talking about the problems and start working with the solutions.
The SocialGo team provide the piatform but it is up to us to make it a successful platform
Now if SocialGo can give the flexibility of ning, in page layout with friends invite that ning did have, SocialGo will have the edge on ning.
There is a lot of unhappy creators on ning because of this move to do away with things.
I have been on ning just over a year, and we have less now than what we started with.
So, what are we going to do? -
