Make e-mail verification optional, please!
As you guys know, Ning recently added email verification, as well. It has been our experience there that our rate of new membership has dropped about 80% per day because of this process... and we ourselves use emails for our network that are not valid, for various reasons.
It is very important that network owners have control over this feature, as it does not server everybody. If we need it, we can turn it on, but if we don't, it's hurting our networks.

Inappropriate?I am evaluating SocialGo with the free trial period right now. I agree - please make e-mail verification optional - under control of the network owner. As a possible future network owner, I don't want or need e-mail addresses. There is a more important reason as well - external sign-in verification.
I am looking at creating a Twitter related community where people would use the SocialGo "Twitter Connect" widget. I want the ability for users to sign in quickly and effortlessly. As a Twitter App developer (BigTweet.com), I currently do not get a user's e-mail address during the OAuth sign-in process. I would not want it with an associated SocialGo network either for exactly the reason that Aaron mentioned. It's another roadblock to sign-up that isn't necessary in all cases and will drive away users.
I imagine the same issue arises with the upcoming Facebook Connect and a future Google Friend Connect.
There are probably many types of networks where e-mail verification would be desirable, but please make it optional. Pretty please :)
I’m disappointed

Inappropriate? We very much understand the effect that email verification has on membership drop-off. Every extra step in the sign-up process see less members make it through.
The reason we (& Ning) modified our email verification is to control spam, which if left uncontrolled will destroy your netywork eventually. We are aware that Ning has had a terrible time lately with spam and we have acted promptly to avoid the same on SocialGO.
What is also important is that when members verify there email that they also agree to receive emails from you. This is a legal requirement in many countries and is strictly enforced by internet service providers and big webmail providers like GoogleMail & Hotmail. For sure this process effects sign-ups, but the of those that do sign-up you are then legally able to email them as they have agreed up front to receive your emails.
Sorry I could give you the exact answer you wanted, but I'm afraid there are external legal and operational pressures on us that don't allow exactly what you want.
I would be happy to hear anytime any ideas you have on how we can improve your membership sign-up. Email me at support@socialgo.com.
