Inappropriate?While it may not quite be a "pause" button, you can try this:
Deselecting that button will filter that user from your updates.
If you want to see them again, you can go to the Settings -> Home tab and remove them from your hidden friends.
Let us know if you have any other thoughts...
One thing to note: we sometimes have a hard time keep friends up to date, so it is possible that some of the usernames you ought to have in the drop down will not be there.

Inappropriate?That solution will work pretty well for what I need. The two things I'm missing from the solution that Merlin described are:
1) The ability to 'catch up' on what I missed while I had a friend hidden.
2) The ability to manage all traffic from a given individual with one click, instead of service by service.
Also, managing the traffic for a user by clicking on the individual post, while convenient, is not entirely obvious or intuitive. An aggregated friend list where I could view all my active and hidden friends would be swell.
