Russ, the "hideous" url to which you are referring is currently how an AJAX application has to work if one wants to keep a pseudo-"browser-history". Here's an example, if you click on the "Settings" tab, then the "Lifestream" tab, and click your browser's back button, it will successfully navigate between the tabs, simulating an application-like experience.
Because of the limitations set forth by today's browsers, this is not possible unless we keep track of your current state using that big long "hideous" string following the "#" symbol in the url.
It is rather ugly (believe me, we've tried to get around it), but it's how we have to for now, and does actually work as a url. Take a look at GMail (www.gmail.com), and Yahoo! Maps (maps.yahoo.com) and you'll notice a similar behavior.
As far as whether it will replace the URL or not will depend on if you're logged in or not. If you aren't, then when you go to someone's profile page (not yet implemented), then you will just see something like "ben.socialthing.com" (in the instance that you'd want to see my lifestream).
Hope this clears things up.
I’m excited

Inappropriate? That is a very interesting idea. I will pass it along and see what we can come up with. Thanks for the input!

Inappropriate?Ross, this definitely is in the works and near completion. Something like rosslarocco.socialthing.com would be your "public profile" page that your friends can see. It would also serve as your rss and foaf endpoints. Hope this is what you're looking for.

Inappropriate?Sounds good Ben. Keep up the great work!

Inappropriate? Not quite yet, but it's on it's way...very very soon

Inappropriate?Will this replace the hideous URL (i.e. https://www.socialthing.com/#&lifestream:1:1:j20=&) with socialthing.com/username or username.socialthing.com?

Inappropriate?Okay. As long as we both agree that they're hideous, let's never speak of this again.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Has this been implemented yet? I don't mind the "hideous" URL so much for myself... but is there a link to give out to friends/family/etc so they can follow my lifestream? Maybe I'm just missing it?
I’m confident

Inappropriate? Not quite yet, as there's no concept of "profile" on our site. This feature is on target with our upcoming public launch, which will happen very soon...we're very excited about it. Stay tuned!
