What is the Socrata API and what is the future of my widgets?
I have two questions:
1. What is the API? I am not a programmer, so should I be concerned with this option?
2. What about the widgets? (Is that what the API is for?) Will they continue to work in my webapges indefinitely?

Inappropriate?My widgets do not work at all anymore. With blist, I was able to periodically export my data to give my manager. Doesn't seem to work here. This is certainly a step backwards from how we were using the service.
I’m exceedingly aggravated

Can you send me links to where your widgets are embedded? I'd like to see what could be going wrong. -
In addition, we do still support CSV export, so you can export your data to send to your manager. Here's an FAQ entry on the topic: http://getsatisfaction.com/socrata/to... -
Chris,
The site is on our intranet, so you can't get to the web view, but the HTML is as simple as could be -
<html>
<script src="http://app.blist.com/formWidget.js?lensId=256279&height=100px"></script>
</html>
When I try to add a record, it just spins. -

Ah, ok, you're using a form widget, not a grid widget. I spoofed your widget and was able to submit successfully, so I'm not sure what's going on.
Can you contact me at chris.metcalf (at) socrata.com and we'll work through what else might be going on that could be causing your issue?
Thanks,

If you're not a programmer, you probably don't care about the API. The Socrata API is a service that allows software developers to write applications that integrate directly with Socrata's back-end servers.

The old widgets will continue to work for some time, but I recommend that you upgrade your old blist widgets to new Socrata dataset widgets. For instructions on how to do that, see this FAQ entry:

Let me know if this answers your questions.
Thanks,
Chris

Thanks, Chris. I guess I was confused and panicked. When I went back to socrata, I saw the dataset embed feature. Another question,.. sorry. Before the blist widget was limited to three sizes. Do I know have more control over the widget presentation in my webpage through my html code or is it just one standard size. (I know, I have to try it, but if I know the answer ahead of time, it will save a lot of frustration.I am a teacher and I use blist and widgets to present information to parents via the web. I am not a programmer, so I do a lot of guessing and missing. ....But I do appreciate what you are all doing.) -
We have a more robust widget publishing workflow on our roadmap, but for now if you click on the "Publish" button in the Publishing tab when you're in edit mode (click the Edit button in the toolbar), you'll get the old widget wizard.
You can also customize the size of the widget by adjusting the "height=" and "width=" parameters in the embed code.
