"Featuring" metadata field
I'm not sure but I think that songbird is able to add metadata to files so why not add a "featuring" metadata field to musics. I think it is really missing to the idv3 standard and it is really painful to have tons of different artists just because they do featurings. For example if I have a "The Beatles feat. The Rolling Stones" song, I will have a "The Beatles feat. The Rolling Stones" artist with only one song, which is really inconvenient. It would be better for it to appear under "The Beatles" artist. On the other hand, I don't want to lose the information and tag my song "The Beatles" cause I'd like it to pop up if I'm looking for Rolling Stones songs. It would be great to have a field for the main artist and a field for the contributors and being able to browse them (for example, if I browse "The Beatles" songs, I'd like to see "The Beatles", "The Beatles feat. X" and "X feat, The Beatles" songs to appear). There are many options to do this (put the featuring in the title or in comment for example) but none of them is really convenient.
I'm not sure I'm very clear but I think that everyone has experienced this problem so I think I'll be understood

Inappropriate? Our search mechanism gives you an ability to search by any part of Artist field.
For "The Beatles feat. The Rolling Stones" you should be able to see this track by searching The Beatles, Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Rolling Stones or The Beatles feat. The Rolling Stones (any of these).
At least I can do this on 0.7pre Nightly builds. -
Inappropriate?Yes, the search mechanism is really convenient. My problem is more relative to the filter panes where you could have lots of different artists just because of featuring.
On iTunes, they brought two solutions for this problem which aren't ideal I think. The first one is a metadata field called album artist so even if the artist of one track of the album contain a featuring, the overall artist of the album is the same (it works well for compilations too). And in a second time, they just duplicate all the metadatas (the one which will be displayed and the one which will be used by the library for sorting). so for example : "The Beatles feat. The Rolling Stones" is displayed but the library sorts it as if it was "The Beatles". I think it's a quite painful solution for a so small issue but.. it work well.
I know it's not a very big problem because you can use search mechanism but for people who like to browse there library via service pane or directly by browsing it, it's quite annoying.
I’m undecided

Inappropriate?I agree and the lack of this functionality is something that annoys me about most music players. It would be great if Songbird could have this, or perhaps more generally the ability to add customisable tagging fields and display them in columns/filter pane or wherever.
At the moment I am using Foobar2000, partly because this is the only software I have found where I can add any field I like to a track. I have the featured artist appear in the artist column if necessary like "The Beatles (feat. The Rolling Stones)". Of course, Foobar makes this easy with its powerful titleformatting and ability to customise practically everything. I am not sure if Songbird will be getting such flexibility any time soon, but I'd love to eventually switch to using Songbird because it would be so much cooler! :) -
Inappropriate?I completely agree, this is a MUST have and I would say more. Sometimes you have two or more artists making a duo (trio, etc.) and I would like to find the song in the filter pane under each artist name. Hope I'm clear. louis

Inappropriate?Hi,
Multiple values in tag would gives a real flexibility boost to tagging feature in Songbird.. (its specified in the ID3V2.4 spec)
"ID3v2.4 is the latest version of the standard, (...) It uses a null byte to separate multiple values, so the character "/" can appear in text data again. Another new feature introduced in ID3v2.4 is to allow the addition of a tag to the end of the file before other tags (like ID3v1)."
(from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ID3)
Hope this part of the spec if 'compatible' wwith the current Songbird (tagging) architecture.
cheers :-)
I’m confident

Inappropriate? This is by the way a briliant idea. Vorbis Comment and the ASF metadata formats handle it very well.
I remember encoding some WMA lossless for a test and I noticed with MP3Tag that ASF has the same approach as ID3v2.4 and Vorbis. More flexibility than this, I think it's impossible. Finally I think that the computer-based music formats are aquiring maturity specially in the metadata area. I'm sure that the Songbird staff is aware of this and many other issues and will do the best they can to make the biggest multimedia room for our computers. It depends on our help, of course; so let's keep spreading the word.
Congratulations people. Songbird deserves all support.
Peace, Edu.
