Add all functionality of Firefox 3 into songbird
When signing into facebook I noticed that facebook chat was not supported by the browser, and facebook promted me to upgrade to firefox 2.0 . Is the songbird browser less powerful than FF2? Why not add all of the functionality of FF3 to the songbird browser. This allready seems like a very powerful application even in beta.

Inappropriate?Facebook probably didn't do a very good job of detecting the browser so it assumed you were using firefox 1.x
-
Inappropriate?Yes, this isn't a problem with Songbird. It's because facebook uses browser detection in their site. Since Songbird is not a recognized browser, they assume it won't work; so they don't allow it to. Songbird is built on the same code as Firefox 3. So, if Facebook recognized Songbird as a browser, I am confident that it would work.
Unfortunately, all you can do is complain to Facebook. -
Uhm, no. Songbird's browser is most definitely not built on the same code as Firefox 3. Are you really a Songbird developer?? It is clearly using the Firefox 2 engine. (No page zoom, Firefox 2 password query, no awesomebar, etc.) -
They are all GUI features and not part of the Gecko engine. The gecko engine is what would decide if FB renders correctly. -
they are probably checking the user agent string for "Firefox", when they should instead be checking for "Gecko" and the gecko version - firefox uses 1.9.0.4 and songbird uses 1.9.0.1 -
How is page zoom a GUI feature? And I can't imagine it is a coincidence that the exact window (with the same wording) for passwords as Firefox 2 comes up. -
Did you just ask why page zooming is a graphical feature? Seriously? -
I didn't ask anything, I stated the fact that page zoom is not a GUI feature, it is a feature of the rendering engine. -
If Songbird is built on FF3- or even 2- then why is it incompatible w/. FF addons and so much less capable as a browser? Shouldn't Songbird ultimately be little more than a massive extension to FF3, then? It seems that Songbird could be developed and an 'expansion' for FF that runs in its own tab instead of as a wholly separate program. Also, I fail to understand FF3's inability to tie into and control Songbird, or even read track updates directly (instead of them being displayed in the corner of the screen'. If they're built on the same code/engine, why do they seem wholly incompatible, with few exceptions? Are they different branches, like FF and Seamonkey or the old Mozilla browser and Netscape? -
Inappropriate?if dempsey would update user-agent switcher to work with 0.7 then that would probably work
-
Inappropriate? With the new Fire.fm extension out now, this is an absolute necessity!
-
Inappropriate? It Probably Doesnt Even Need Gecko Or Firefox Code Considering I Facebook Has Full Functionality In Browsers Such as Safari For Windows And Google Chrome (Which ill admit is built similarly to Firefox)
-
Inappropriate? This can be fixed by changing the config for the browser.
It's probably not the best idea ever, but it's what i've done just to get round the problem.
To do this, go into songbird, open a new tab, then type 'about:config' then do a search for 'agent'.
You should get a result with a preference name of 'general.useragent.extra.songbird'.
Double click it, and change the string to 'Firefox/3.0.4'. This will make most websites think that you are running Firefox 3.0.4 rather than songbird (which in essence are the same thing anyway), so will let facbook chat work again.
This is a pretty cheap work around, and might not be good for the overall browsing experience. If anyone with more technological knowledge can shed any light, then delete this :D

unfortunately...it eliminates your ability to download add-ons. -
You can, but you have to do it manually, which is a bit of a pain (as I said, it changes the overall experience)
To install an add-on manually, download the xpi file then go into songbird -> add-ons, then click the button, install add-on, at the bottom. Find the xpi file, then install it.
It's not hard, but its longer than the usual click-and-install. -
Will this expand compatibility w/ FF addons, as well- or is that a separate matter altogether? -
Inappropriate?I think they team developing FF3 would be out of a job, if they did that lol
I’m most kidding

songbird is built using firefox's rendering engine meaning it displays webpages the exact same way Firefox does. The interface is also built using XUL like Firefox but all the elements are organized differently and given different names so there is some "porting" required to make them work in songbird. many extensions have already been ported
Shouldn't Songbird ultimately be little more than a massive extension to FF3, then? It seems that Songbird could be developed and an 'expansion' for FF that runs in its own tab instead of as a wholly separate program.
no, songbird is built using the same technologies as Firefox, but not built directly from Firefox code. It is not a branch or a fork.

Would it be possible for a software program to be created (by someone so inclined) that would automate the conversion process?
