Add file organization capability
A basic ability to arrange files on hard disk via songbird would be very useful. The user could open new media files to be imported into library in songbird, and have the app copy the files to the library directory, or any other directory for that matter, based on a freely chosen file naming schema. The user should be allowed to choose the location of the library, or maybe even have multiple locations for it. "Watch folders" would be a good idea: Media is not imported into the library automatically, when opened in songbird, but only if it is located in a watch folder, into which the user can copy any files they wish via the aforementioned mechanism.

Inappropriate? This is one of the features that I think is extremely important, and what I miss from Windows/itunes. Although Amorak does it in Linux, which i've switched too, it has some problems every now and then... but mostly its nice.
Songbird has, i believe, huge potential, and i've had fun using it (except for those crashes, but hey, its all early doors yet), and it needs a few features yet to be the only media player on my Ubuntu box - yes, i'm running about 4 different media players, because each one does something better than the others - Amorak is the best for syncing with my sony ericsson w200i, and sorting all my music (files, that is), Exaile and Banshee both have their places, Exaile is great but doesn't organize like I'd want, and Banshee is nice but its pretty laggy every now and then and heavy on the resources. However, both of those sync up great with my girlfriends' ipod, so i'm willing to run them now and again. I'm also trying to run quod libet, but that's giving me some grief of unknown varieties. such is Linux though, eh?
Oh yeah, is there any way you guys can get it to sync with Music Brainz, or use a Picard plug-in or something? That program is simply amazing...
Cheers, Keep up the good work!

I’m happy with the long-tem outlook!

Inappropriate? In addition to being able to freely choose filenames, fileinfo, directories, etc... Songbird NEEDS to allow users to add multiple song files to the media library simultaneously. For example, maybe a certain folder contains some songs that are to be added to the library (2 or more), but not all 3000 songs to avoid a huge mess.
Users can currently add files (one at a time; not ctrl OR shift selection), add folders, import playlists, and import music libraries from other sources...
I’m disappointed

Inappropriate?Yep as I have commented on the feature suggestion I would love to see this feature added (hopefully as even a part of the core) as well as the ability to add multiple songs at a time.
I’m excited

Inappropriate? You can try this extension maybe :

I’m confident

this is one of the best points

Inappropriate?I was able to add an entire file super easy, using the "open location" and I navigated to the file folder and "downloaded" the files, it works just fine. It seems like the term download is a misnomer in this case, but hey it worked.
I’m trying to be helpful

Inappropriate?I like the idea of organizing like in iTunes. But don't forget that part of that feature in iTunes involves dragging and dropping a song from the file explorer of the OS the player installed in (Finder, Windows Explorer, Nautilus, Konqueror) into the list that represents the library in the player and having it either moved or copied (by chosen option) into the exact type of path the user wants either based on the file naming scheme or a separate folder nesting scheme.
Oh, and (this is a separate issue) I think I'd also like a plugin that allows you to export an iTunes library with the option of hand modifying the initial path to be compatible with other OSes (ex: change the text /media/disk/Music/band/album in Linux to E:\Music\band\album in Windows or Disk:Music:band:album in Mac OS X). Which also can be done with a text editor since XML files are just text files, I know, but not everybody knows you can do that (that was more an idea for people who don't know any better). Maybe there's a plugin that allows this specific feature and I don't know about it. If you want to suggest one I am open to suggestions. -
Inappropriate?Watch folders can be tested out on our nightly builds right now. If you'd rather wait for the official release, hang on just a bit longer, it'll be here in Feb 09.
A great resource to see what we're working on and when it's slated for release is our release pages. Currently we're working on Hendrix.

Excellent. Thanks Laura, I'll check it out now. -
Inappropriate?I'm glad to see watch folders are going to be in Hendrix, sounds great :) but automatic library organisation would be even better. If you want an idea of how it should work, I seem to remember JuK for linux had a really nice implementation which allowed you to easily change the folder structure and file naming scheme. It's been several years since I last used JuK or indeed linux though so I'm not sure whether it's changed, or even whether it's still being developed.
If/when this idea is implemented, it's important that the organisation/filename scheme is customisable - this is the only reason I don't use the automatic organization in itunes (other than the fact that my library's split been my computer and an external drive because don't have enough space for all of it on my computer, and itunes can't cope with multiple music folders).
I’m appreciative
