Addon idea - now playing record player
Today I was trying to think of a unique addon that could be made for Songbird, and I liked this idea, so I thought I would share it. When a song is playing in Songbird or iTunes, the player simply shows the song's album cover in the lower left, which works well, but it is very static. People like the interaction and appearance of record players, so I thought it would be neat to replace the now playing cover with one since it is more representative of what music looks like when you play it in the physical world.
I just threw this together in photoshop, and I couldn't really draw my own parts for the record player so it doesn't look great.
If you double clicked an album in your library, as you normally would, and play it, the needle could move over and the record could start playing. To represent the album you are currently playing, the inner image on the vinyl could be a cutout from the album cover (I saw this technique done in a theme for an iTunes app called bowtie: http://macthemes2.net/forum/viewtopic... ).
In addition, as shown in the picture, I thought that for those who really wanted to relive the vinyl experience, you could click an album cover and drag it- once you start dragging the cover it could turn into the vinyl, which you could manually place onto the record player to start the album.
I just thought this would be an addon that would really stand out and do something different in Songbird.

Inappropriate?Ah! This is so Awesome!
I really like your idea Murphy! But why limit the record player to the bottom left of the songbird? Fill up the whole screen I'd say :-)
And maybe some kind of way to flicker through your Albumcovers like they were in a box, you know - old school.
I'd totally provide any non-coding ( read photoshop ) help to the person who create such an add-on.
I’m a record player kind'a guy.

Inappropriate?I was inspired by your suggestion of a bigger version, and I made this. I was trying to come up with different ways to use up the screen space, and I ended up coming up with all of these ideas :D.
You could start typing in the artist name until the box shows up, and then you could mouse over the records to flip through them.

I might try to make a mockup of a media view that shows each artist as a box of records like this.
I’m experimenting

Inappropriate?Yeah that's pretty much how I meant, looks quite nice!

Inappropriate?I love records! That boxful brings back memories. It would be a great media view!

Inappropriate?Wauv dudes that looks like it has some future.

Inappropriate? This idea is AWESOME! how about the ability to click (and hold) on the record and "scratch" it? dunno how hard that'd be but it seems like with a record player that would be a killer feature.
This just led me to another idea:
a DJ view with two turntables and you choose what song will be on each turntable and you could scratch in from song #1 to song #2, then load song #3 on the turntable that song #1 was originally on. it'd let songbird do some cool stuff for parties and dances. although a lot of that functionality would be for novelty purposes, it could set songbird apart. -
Inappropriate?I saw this image while watching a liveblog of the Apple event today and thought for a minute that they had actually made it possible to play the new "iTunes LPs" on a wooden record player in iTunes. Then I realized that that is just the cover of the Grateful Dead album
