Administrator rights required for install
Why does Songbird 1.1 require Administrator rights to install on Windows? Your previous releases did not have this limitation.

Inappropriate?Normally, it shouldn't.
I'm afraid, there is something in your OS settings....
Is that Windows Vista?
Can you provide exact steps of what you're trying to do?
Does it ask for Admin rights if you're installing any other application? -
I'm running XP with SP3. When I run the installer for version 1.0.0.0 (for comparison) I'm first asked by Windows "Do you want to run this file" as a security warning, but once I click "Run", the install process continues unabated. When trying to install 1.1.1.0, I get the same security warning, but when I click "Run", the next window is a "Run As" window that asks me "What user account do you want to use to run this program." If I select my current user account I get the error message window titled "Songbird Setup" that says "The installer requires admin access, try again."
It may very well be something in my OS settings, but these same settings allow 1.0.0.0 to install with no problems. -
Inappropriate?1.1 now pops up a "which usr do you wish to install as" box. When deselecting admin to use just me on this Public Library PC 1.1 pops up a
"must have admin rights to install". Previous ver. _1.0.0-860 only needed
a new folder on descktop to install to as a work around. Am willing to try others :) This being my only means of loading my iPod gift.
I’m hopeful

Inappropriate?I've talked to ali a couple of weeks ago regarding this issue, turns out that Songbird always required Admin rights for install but didn't managed to do this properly until around the 1.1.b release.
Don't know if this is related somehow? Anyway, Imo Songbird shouldn't use such an limitation - it's up to the admin of the computer to set up the restrictions, not the app itself.
Seems a bit weird when installing Songbird on another computer and just copy the extracted files back to the restricted account makes it possible to run the program flawless. This admin rights thingy only creates a lot of more wok before running Songbird, and of course - the longer it takes to install Songbird / the more effort needed, the less the chance people will download and bug test nightlies.
So unless there's some legal issue, this isn't neccesary.
After all, open source schould be useable for everyone ;-)

Inappropriate?A little late... but try a portable version of songbird, it'll usually install fine in a my documents folder or flash drive.
-
Inappropriate?I have no admin rights on my laptop. I would like to try Songbird instead of iTunes installed on VM, but unfortunately I'm unable even to install it.
Portable version is currently only for Songbird 1.0, while my iPod is only supported since 1.1.
Is it possible to introduce some flag or whatever to install the app without admin rights?
I’m confused

Inappropriate?google handles this with their chrome browser flawlessly when a NONadmin
logid exists on a PUBLIC_PC that ain't restricted for dll & install for
NONadmin usrs. IF I ever [when!] get to dll songBird and install to iPod's
flash - I'll try running from the iPod itself @ various PUBLIC_PCs. THE
BROWSER is the only place to truely access an app from ANY PC public
or private. Other .eggs attempt to convince Public Liraries to accept
their apps - BUT majority of PubLib Admins reply that the expectation of
having IE on all PCs negates ANY choice. Hence usr Chrome dll&install
on unrestricted machines. Of course reboots using Deep Freeze apps
blow Chrome away BUT just to drag .mp3 onto a iPod this is just another
step. COBY of course supports drag but we are iPod'rs! We may not all
have mac on web though, this being America and not a little Asian country. -
Actually, CD ripping would require admin access to install possibly (not sure how Gearworks is designed).
That being said, I'd like to see this too eventually.. For me personally though, I'd prefer to see resources poured elsewhere currently (unless its a quick task).
