I know I'm unusual but I don't want album art. How do I stop it downloading and how do I make sure it's not in my files

Inappropriate?It only downloads and saves album art if you choose to do so.
By right clicking a song -> get album artwork or via tools > get album artwork.
If you don't do this, no album artwork will be downloaded.
Furthermore you can hide the album artwork pane.
