Better Sorting for the Anal Retentive :)
Is it possible to sort albums by artist first and then, list them in chronological order within each artist?

You can create New Smart Playlist by going to File-New Smart Playlist menu.
In Smart Playlist dialog window create rules(add multiple by clicking + button).

Inappropriate?I don't want to have to create any "playlist" just to get something sorted. Windows Media Player can do this without have to go through all that. How about a simple checkmark to "allow albums from artist to be arranged chronological"?
