Can you download songs?
Can I download songs through Songbird without having to go through other websites? Or is this like Itunes where it only stores the songs you download?

Inappropriate?Songbird is a mediaplayer and has no own store like itunes.
It's a mediaplayer and a browser.
In order to download songs, you will have to visit other websites.
Songs you download in songbird will automatically appear in your library and will be downloaded to the folder, you can specify in the Options.

@chocobanana - What build are you using?
Do you have "watch folders" enabled? If so, Songbird adds the media you download into the specified folder automatically to the library. You will have to download the music to another folder ("Extras --> Options --> Main --> Music Downloads")
