Inappropriate?First there is no such thing as a tray in Linux ;) (nor in windows in fact).
And personally I would like to have the choice to display an icon in the notification area, Songbird being reduced or not. Just like Rhythmbox. I really appreciate to see the artist and song title on mouseover. Really. And the ability to go to the next song is nice too.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Yes as "Colar" says most media players in Linux can do this.
This is a sorely missed feature that songbird needs urgently IMHO, to make what is already a good player, a better one.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?there's an add on for that right now it's called firetray I think. But I would like to see it native

Inappropriate? To be honest, I'd rather see Linux fix their task list to allow its icons to contain flexible menus first.
The reason the notification area is abused, is because "Linux desktops are doing it wrong", and so 3rd party developers have no choice except to abuse standards to provide a streamlined experience.
