DAAP/iTUNES-SHARING and RADIO PLAYLIST support
I've tried SongBird, and I think it has a great potential in becoming the open source replacement for iTunes. I would like a few suggestions for its improvement.
First, it would be great if SongBird has Direct Audio Access Protocol (DAAP) support, which would mean that it can access iTunes shared libraries across LAN
Also, another would be a playlist of Radio stations. Some internet radio stream files like *.pls or *.ram can be downloaded, and placed on radio stations playlist.
Finally, it would be nice if SongBird had more codec libraries backing it, like FFmpeg, so it can put any kind of media file into its playlists, and be able to play it.
Thanks for hearing my suggestions, and please keep up with the good work!

Inappropriate?Thanks for your suggestions.

Inappropriate?I agree - I tried the DAAP add-on for Songbird with some disappointment. You need to currently know the IP address of everybody you want to share from, you can't share to them and it is very slow connecting the first time because it tried to build a local reference list. This is the key feature stopping me from ditching iTunes as i share with 10-15 people over iTunes (which itself has unnecessary connection limits)
Chop chop - IMHO, this function needs higher development priority.
Thanks ;-D
I’m hoping for more soon

Inappropriate?I'd love to see DAAP support expanded (assuming it is there and I haven't found it yet), maybe even with mDns discovery (bonjour-style). I'm guessing that they will face the same issue with iTunes that other open source projects have: the daap sharing uses some encryption which prevents non-iTunes clients from attaching. It'd probably work the other way, where songbird was the "server" and iTunes the "client."
I’m interested

Inappropriate?great ideas. I just downloaded SB today and so far I'm loving it. Next up will be my MacBook.
I’m excited

Inappropriate?I don't think Direct Audio Access Protocol (DAAP) should be implemented. iTunes sharing features all suck badly and everyone knows about it. Most people looking at songbird are awaiting an alternative, just search for "share" and see how many people answer.
If songbird is to be an iTunes rip its a failed project. The future is to be different and better, not just an "iTunes open source alternative". I mean, WHY? iTunes is already free, why would I use an open source version of it that will always lack behind with bugs?
If you are interested in creating a new player rather then ripping off iTunes maybe you will enjoy this: http://gsfn.us/t/d23o (also covers your radio stations issue) -
Inappropriate?I agree something is needed, but DAAP is a proprietary Apple protocol, whose current version hasn't even been reverse engineered yet even.
I agree something is needed, but we could never support DAAP well. POTI's best option would be to support a more open protocol. If Songbird claims to have iTunes compatible sharing, and Apple change the protocol (which, from experience working at an Apple Premium reseller, they have done so at least once), people will expect POTI to fix it on the spot (which could adversely affect development), and the protocol may not be easily reverse engineered anyway.
And Songbird certainly isn't aiming to emulate iTunes. iTunes is a pretty basic player overall (compared to others). And you'll find that there aren't too many ways of making a media player anyway.
Many features such as concerts, feathers and plugins already strongly differentiate it from iTunes I feel, and features which will be inherited from firefox eventually, will certainly widen the gap.
Just my opinion though... -
Yeah I agree. I just feel frustrated seeing the way Songbird integrates into the internet and still doesn't offer a library sharing method. There isn't ANY player available that fills that gap, how come it isn't a priority to fill that gap no one else can? -
Well, technically, something such as a locked down ftp server could even be used probably.. If there was a command put in place to support notifications to the client when the contents had changed, it would possibly work as well as DAAP.
