Exclude folders on mass storage sync
First of all: thank you Songbird team for putting in support for USB Mass storage device syncing into your latest beta builds! I can't tell you how excited I am about that. Now, at the risk of asking for even more:
Could you add the option so that when you set up syncing for a particular device, it only deals with a certain folder on the device? At the moment, it looks through the entire device and finds every single MP3 on it. This is fine for a really basic MP3 player, but when I plug in my TMobile G1, Songbird sees every single ringtone, audio recorder file, and podcast download on the device, and I don't want a single one of these files put on my computer.
I'm sure this is complicating things, and I'm already grateful for being able to sync my device now, but at the moment I can't set up the auto sync, which would certainly be nice.
Thanks for your time and effort!

Inappropriate?Hello
As a matter of fact, I don't know how Songbird can handle multiple folder structures on the device. At the moment, as far as I've seen, SB is looking for a folder called "Music", and will manage files in that folder only.
On my Sansa Clip, I have mp3 (podcasts) in other branches than the "Music" one, and their are not retrieved not sync'ed by SB.
What does the folder structure look like on your phone? -
Inappropriate?Actually, that's how I have my phone set up. I created a "music" folder, but SB is definitely finding mp3's from elsewhere. I would be happy if it worked the way you say!
-
Inappropriate? And what happens when you use the synchronized mode, with a playlist? will songbird erase data from everywhere? or only from the Music folder?
Maybe the manual mode looks everywhere, while the sync mode only manages the Music folder. I have tested this difference by myself though.
And, by the way, is the Music folder at the root? -
Inappropriate? The music folder is at the root. I'll have to back up the data sometime and test your theory out. I don't exactly feel like losing all the other stuff on my phone!
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?Well, I guess I'm not surprised that the beta is pretty buggy in this regard.
I just backed up my phone, and now I'd like to experiment with the syncing, but the program seems a little broken. If I click on my device on the left-hand pane, it shows me the syncing options for the device. The problem is, nothing works. It starts off by default with the "Sync" and "All music..." radio buttons checked. That's not what I want at all, so I tried clicking the "selected playlists" button. But then it doesn't show any playlists in the box below. It's just blank. I tried saving this selection, but every time I leave the screen and come back, it's back to "Sync" and "All music...". Even if I select "Manually Manage" and click save, it reverts back to "Sync" and "All music...".
What's wrong? -
Inappropriate? That's strange, the beta should not be that buggy.. it's working pretty well for me actually with my Sansa Clip.
But have you made sure to use the same builds for both SB and the MSC extension? I'm using this 1.3(rc?) build at the moment :http://developer.songbirdnest.com/builds/Songbird1.3/latest/ .
On a new profile, it will propose to install the recommended extensions, including the MSC extension.
So, try on a new profile and do not install the MTP extension, to be sure.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Yikes. I tried downloading that version, but when I tried to run the executable, it then alerts me to the fact that I already have SB installed, and asks if I'd like to uninstall the old version first. I say yes, it pauses, and then the exact same message comes up. I can click on yes until the cows come home.
Can't say I have as much confidence in the beta as you do :)

Inappropriate?Known issue: you have to use regedit, and remove the entry in HK_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Songbird/Release
Dont know if it is related to this build or to an old build that placed something there!
Then, after installation, check in the About Songbird that you have today's build -
Inappropriate?Hmm, this could be symptomatic of whatever is wrong with my computer, but I don't even have "HK_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Songbird"
Should I have also mentioned I'm running Windows 7?
-
Inappropriate?You should have ;)
I was about to ask...
I dont think Windows seven is supported yet by Songbird :(

this is one of the best points
-
klint is correct, we are not yet supporting Windows 7 as it has not yet been officially released. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the assistance, folks. After some effort, I've uninstalled 1.3 (well, Windows couldn't find it anymore, so I had to delete the files and manually remove registry entries) and I'm back to 1.2.
It's not a big deal though. The single reason I updated to 1.3 was for the mass storage device syncing, but with foldersync in 1.2, I'm about halfway to what 1.3 offers. That's fine with me.
I’m satisfied...for now!!
-
Blech! Sorry for the troubles. Still we're glad you are back in working order now! -
Inappropriate?Don't worry about it! You guys shouldn't be expected to support an OS 2 and a half months before it's even released (which is when I was trying the beta). So I was trying a beta on an early OS release. That's my risk! :)
I like Songbird a lot, and though there are some things I want to see added to it, the main one I want (USB mass storage support) is something you guys are clearly working on, so I'm very happy. Thanks for all the help.
I’m confident
