Inappropriate?Hello,
I believe you are going to have to "Import" your itunes library first.. And I don't know if you checked the "Export" Checkboxes (pic)..
Also if you are not seeing changes exported after that, try going to "Tools > Export Library Changes"

When the release dust settles we should work on getting this and managed mode info on the Getting Started pages. -
ya its pretty basic right now, i was thinking of moving them to a separate sub-page and going super-duper in detail with them this week... ;) -
of course you did, you're amazing! lets try and work on it together, it will be great to route a lot of these issues there when it's more flushed out. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for all your help here , it worked , just needed to start a new playlist was one of the issues , amped i can this now for my Itunes replacement. Only remaining issue is that about 20% of my playlists tend to show in itunes but not play ... no idea there, but I can live with that - yes itunes is that bad .
Thanks again - songbird rox
I’m almost there

Inappropriate? So, to export my playlists I first have to import from itunes? I re-ask this questions because I have been exclusively managing my music with songbird, and I do not have any music in iTunes. All I would like to do is send all of my music to iTunes so that I can then manage my iTouch...I love songbird and the new ability to consolidate the library AND to mirror whatever is in songbird in iTunes is the last nail in iTunes' coffin IMO.
So my question is, do I need to import the iTunes playlist even though there is nothing in it? I have "export tracks to iTunes", "Sync playlists", and "export smart playlists" all checked and I tried the export changes command under the tools menue but it has only exported my recently played and most played playlists....So I have thousands of songs in songbird, and about forty in iTunes...What am I doing wrong?
Even without the ability to mirror to iTunes, songbird is the best media player there is now...Thanks songbird "peeples" :-D
I’m Obviously Confused

Inappropriate?ParadoX,
yes i understand, it is a tad confusing :-( Sorry. I'm still trying to figure out all the possible scenarios that a user can run into via the new features in 1.2 (itunes import/export and manage music) I thought i was able to reproduce this error yesterday, but found out my external drive wasnt connected... silly me. sorry, off topic.
And I'm still trying to figure out the best way to export your library to itunes in your situation :/ What i established so far is that: NO, you do not need to import an itunes library for the export functions to work. (So thats good - I don't need to file a bug on that.)
[ excuse me if i think out loud for a bit (taking some notes for myself) :-P ]
Scenario 1:
-New user. New Profile.
-User chooses export options at first run or in options.
-User builds their library.
-User exports to iTunes, all playlists and tracks are exported in there entirety just fine!
:-D
Scenario 2:
-User already had a Songbird library (previous install)
-User wants to export library to iTunes for their ipod/iphone/touch.
-*Only newly played/imported tracks and playlists are exported.* (Everything you imported and 'already established' playlists before you selected the export options won't be exported).
WORKAROUND (to export all tracks to iTunes): Create a new playlist, put all your tracks(entire library) in it. You should now see all your tracks in iTunes thet you see in Songbird.
WORKAROUND2 (to export 'old' playlists): Create a "second version" of all your playlists (i.e. Make a "Favorites2" playlist and copy/drag your "Favorites" playlist into "Favorites2") Those "new" playlists will be exported to iTunes. Then you can rename/cleanup your playlists.
Scenario 3:
-User wants a totally "in sync" library (same on Songbird and iTunes)
-User imports iTunes library. (All Import/Export options are selected)
-User turns on Managed Mode.
-Runs into Bug 16641 - Changing file locations of tracks in Songbird does not import those locations/changes into iTunes.
-Possibility of Ghost tracks/Duplicates can occur, and an out of sync library :-(
So as you can see, you are similar to Scenario 2, and those workarounds should work for you.. Sorry you have to do that... I think the best solution would be a separate "Export Library" option that exports your entire library to that Songbird folder in iTunes, regardless of when you created/imported your music. Lots of possibilities to fix/implement... But hopefully they can all get ironed out soon... ; )
I’m phew... that was a doozy! ...off to more scenario thinkin'

Inappropriate?Michael,
Thanks for your reply...I'll try what you suggest. One thing I'm curious about is, when I export smart playlists, are they "Smart" in iTunes or is it just a normal playlist that has all the songs contained in the songbird smart playlist? I ask because most of my playlists are "Smart"...If songbird just exports normal playlists then I don't foresee any problems with the above workaround.
When I get home I'll try the workaround and post the results.
Thanks again!
I’m Hopeful

...a normal playlist that has all the songs contained in the songbird smart playlist... yes. -
Inappropriate?Personally, I'd like to see the option to select an itunes library file, and hit "export"- more or less just a straight copy of the songbird library to the itunes library :P I'm having a little trouble getting it working for just straight transfers like that
-
Inappropriate?Ok, I have updated iTunes. I created a playlist that contained all of my songs in my library and then opened iTunes...Now iTunes has almost all the songs...but no playlists. I don't want to rebuild my smart playlists (they are mildly complex), and as far as I can tell you can not copy a playlist. I was thinking I would make a copy of my playlist with different names, then I would delete the original, and then rename the new ones so that they would show up in iTunes. However, since I can not copy playlist.... :-/
Also for some reasion there are 30 songs (or items or something) that did not transfer. I don't know which 30 (I have about 2300 songs)
I actually have a suggestion about improving the smart playlists...I just have to figure out where to make it...It probably would be an add on...I don't really know though, I need to look into that I guess.
As I already mentioned, I think it would be great to have a "mirror songbird" option. That is, whatever songbird looks like is exactly how iTunes looks. This would allow me to finally be (basically) free from using iTunes, I only have to mess with it when I manage my iTouch.
All in all I would label this "a step in the right direction", so I'm happy :-)
...I know you all are now supremely relieved :-D
I’m Halfway there
