Exporting/importing ratings and play counts
I would love to see the ability to export ratings and play count to a simple .xml file (or what have you), and another function for importing said file into Songbird again. This would make it so none of us would have to worry about ever truly loosing our ratings or play counts ever again, if we back them up regularly ourselves that is. It would also make it easier to migrate to newer versions of Songbird.

Inappropriate?I'd really love this feature right now. My library has become a little mixed up (albums getting the wrong metadata in the songbird library) and if I rescan everything I'd lose all my ratings. And searching for all the mis-tagged files individually would take ages.
One thing to debate is what should be referenced in such an xml file, the file name or the file metadata.

Inappropriate? This is a MUST have imo. Backing up Itunes database was a simple as copying a few files and pasting them when needed. I found that just pasting my Songbird2 folder w/ profiles did nothing in terms of restoring my desired info. We need something as suggested, or alternatively 2 file menu items: Export Songbird Database & Import Songbird Database. When I clicked either of these I would expect a 'Save as...' prompt, allowing me to save the database (the stuff I as a user care about: playcounts, playlists, and ratings).
All other program info should be left out such as addons/feathers and songbird settings. This is a MUST have with a program that updates as rapidly as Songbird. If you can't import playcounts/ratings from Itunes and KEEP them, people will shy away from Songbird. It's a drag to loose 'years' worth of valuable data.
p.s. I don't care if the file is 100mb and takes 10 minutes to backup! Efficiency is not key here, just ability/stability.
I’m a sad panda bc I lost my library

Inappropriate?I was looking to see if a feature request existed for this and the closest I could find was this: http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show...
Was thinking you guys could piggyback there or you can create a new request using this Feature Suggestion form. -
Inappropriate?I've been working on a tool that uses the webpage API to save your ratings, but I didn't think to save play counts. Maybe I'll try to add that too. It's still a work in progress but so far it works for just uploading your ratings and then fetching them back. Feel free to try it out at http://www.ioscode.com First you have to create a login, then go to the Music Ratings page with the toolbar on the left.

made a user id, but it won't let me log in. Error: Your Login Failed: bad user. I'm pretty sure my info is right.
Looking forward to this.... -
I don't see that a new user was created. Did you go here http://www.ioscode.com/cgi-bin/newUser ? You will be automatically logged in after successfully creating a user id. -
I did last night, then I just tried it again, right now, and just get a "no cookies" error after I click create (which is the same thing that happened last night). -
Ah. I hadn't set everything up to be able to work with cookies disabled yet. I've done some work on that, so it should work better now. -
Awesome! -
Yo! so I created an account (sauntimo) and I've tried to upload my ratings but it's crashed my songbird 3 times in a row now. One time it did manage to scan my whole library but it only uploaded 60ish ratings. I've got about 16,500 tracks atm and about 7,500 are rated. Any suggestions? -
Ok, managed to upload more ratings now. The Artist Ratings are interesting - the average rating doesn't take account of number of ratings so an artist with 1 x 5 star rating will score higher than an artist with 99 x 5 star ratings and 1 x 4 star. Really useful site though, like it! -
1496 look up service errors? Is that where it couldn't cross reference my metadata with Musicbrainz? -
Hi Tim, definitely one of the things I want to do soon is refine and add to the way the ratings are summarized. You're right about lookup service errors, and there's a couple things that can happen. For one the algorithms I'm using to lookup things are not quite perfect yet causing it to not be able to find the right track sometimes, and if you do a lot of lookups at a time, Musicbrainz will start returning "Service not available" messages to prevent it from being overloaded. Songs that don't get found in Musicbrainz should still get their rating added though, and I think I see a bug that might explain why not all of your ratings came through, so I'll be taking a look at that. Thanks for the feedback! -
@ioscode
I can't seem to log in. I figured I didn't remember my password, so I tried all the usuals, and nothing seems to work. I found your reset password form, but still have yet to receive an email, so now I'm wondering if this is a server side thing..
It's not a super big deal, I can even make a new one if necessary, I just really like where you're going with this, so I want to help as much as possible. -
Awesome :) I think it's a brilliant idea - what about writing an add-on that uploads ratings automatically - that would increase exposure to the service too. I think loads of people would really like this! -
@dave - I tested reset password and it's working fine as far as I can tell. Want me to send the email address you have in the system to the email you have posted on your website?
@Tim - I like the add-on idea too, then you wouldn't have to re-scan the whole library to update ratings, it could just send each one you rate as you rate it. -
@ioscode - we can try that. thanks. -
Yeah, definitely! Aw, that would be great, please write it! :) -
Inappropriate? You can Import playcounts from Last.fm with this add on:
http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/...
Which is a good way of keeping them in the cloud. Hopefully some one will write a good manual local library scrobbler soon.
Love your page isocode, just uploading my info :)

Inappropriate?Has anyone here managed to make the Ratings File add on work? Mine crashes on 98% exported every time :(
http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/...
I’m meh. This would be nice if it worked.
-
Look at the RatingFile comment page! -
Inappropriate?I have a work around for the ratings:
Create 5 playlists, each accorrding to how many stars they have, eg
5Stars go in 5S, 4Stars go in 4S, .... 1Stars go in 1S,
Export the playlists.
Clean data, reimport files, and playlists, use these playlists to rank files again.
Not perfect, but it works.
I’m OK
-
Have you tried RatingFile? -
Inappropriate? The Add-On RatingFile is able to im-/export ratings and play counts.
