Files duplicated and renamed by Manage/Watch options
Hey, I searched around for this here and in Bugzilla and couldn't really find anyone who had had this particular problem, although the results are hard to parse through.
Anyway, I just started using Songbird on Ubuntu yesterday and I already like it better than pretty much every other music player out there for Linux. The only problem I've had with it is in regards to Managing and Watching Folders.
I set Songbird to Manage my collection. I then set it to watch my music folder for changes. I didn't realize this meant that Songbird was going to re-add every single song in my library back to my library so that now my entire library is duplicated. Fortunately it's only like 7GB, but still, that's like 1300 tracks I have to go delete from my library.
Also, not only did Songbird duplicate the songs in my library, it made copies of these songs and then RENAMED the original files. So now I have duplicate files where the original ones with all my playcounts...have a 1 stuck on the end of their file names. Which means I have to turn on the file renaming part in manage music collection after I clear the duplicates so that I can get rid of the 1's at the end.
This really is the worst part. If this is what happens when you Manage and Watch, it'd be great if Songbird added the 1 on the new file instead of on the old one.
Sorry if this is a widely known problem or bug.

There is no real warning about that, but you should watch and manage the same folders.
The way I'm using these 2 features is the following:
- At first, I had all my music in folder M1
- I made a full backup all M1 to an external drive (by security)
- I installed Songbird and set the MANAGED Folder to folder M2 (empty at that stage)
- I told Songbird to IMPORT all media from folder M1 (import, not watched, for the moment)
- Doing so, Songbird has copied and renamed all files from M1 to M2
- Then I just deleted all files in M1 (they had already been copied in M2, my new library)
- And then and only then, I told Songbird to WATCH the empty folder M1
Now, each time I want to add a file to my library (managed by Songbird), for example by ripping a CD, or whatever, I create/move the new MP3 files in folder M1.
They are *automatically* recognized by SB and added to the library using the WATCH feature , and copied/renamed to M2 (ie in my library) using the MANAGED MUSIC feature.
After that, I can delete files from M1. M1 actually acts as a buffer to my library.
Hope this make senses :)

perfect. -
I think I did something similar, after I got everything back to normal I created a "Temp" folder in my music directory where I put new music into and then Songbird copies it over to the appropriate place in the music directory and I can delete it later. It's actually not a bad setup and Songbird did a good job renaming the -1 files back to what they should be, so thumbs up. -
Inappropriate?Hi
Just realized that there was a mistyping in my reply, but you have understood what I meant to say :)
It must read :"There is no real warning about that, but you should NOT watch and manage the same folders." instead of "There is no real warning about that, but you should watch and manage the same folders."
I’m sorry

Inappropriate?1700 albums renamed and moved.... this will take a couple of weeks to fix... I am not impressed! No warning whatsoever! Songbird uninstalled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! F*CK!
-
Sorry for what happened to you. Just to let you know, though it won't help you, those missing warnings will be implemented in the next release of Songbird, targeted this fall. -
Inappropriate?I dunno if you have ports to other platforms however please note that case sensitivity is also an issue. I have over 6000 albums archived and of course not all of my tags are perfect (i.e. use "In" instead of "in"). Not at all fun fixing that either.
Thanks for listening. Thankfully Tag & Rename works via wine. If it didn't this problem would take me months to fix. -
By the way, there is also an extension for Songbird that is very powerful, Tagging & Renaming-wise. It is Tagger (tag2file, file2tag, tag2tag, renumber tracks... plus more to come ) -
Inappropriate? If I ever re-install Songbird I'll have a look. Nothing I have ever seen compares to Tag & Rename... I have been looking for a Linux match but nothing has even come close.
