Give SongBird better brand Identity!!
Songbird needs better application identity.
It's okay to mimic features of certain applications (I can see many practically copy & pasted features).. but it needs to stand out on it's own. The UI is friendly and easy to use. It just needs STYLE!

Inappropriate?Well, that's what feathers are for, as far as breaking our similarity to iTunes goes.

Since most people's 'birds have different feathers, brand identity as you define it gets thrown out the window. In my opinion, the best thing to do would be to settle on one icon for Songbird (there are currently three), namely, the one I use as my avatar. -
Inappropriate?The default theme is very similar, but I think it's good to place the control at the bottom to make it different at a glance.
For none technical users, having the UI similar to iTunes isn't a bad thing - people are used to it, and therefore find it easier to accept, whilst also being drawn in by the additional features of SB.
One thing I will say that bugs me - is the lack of a decent icon! In windows the default taskbar and shortcut icon is not very slick. Think of the brand identity the firefox logo has? I quite liked the small bird within a box that I found whilst surfing, maybe the old logo? Even the black one with the white headphones is better than the default yellow one! :P

There are some intersting discussions about branding, ie should sb be renamed 'Mozilla Songbird' and how much support might they give the project? I think the answer is relatively little because POTI is a profit making company. However, it would be nice to forge some stronger links.
I think the beauty of songbird, as she grows, will be in her adaptability; each user will be able to make what they require out of her, like firefox. I don't think that resembling itunes is a major problem; of course there are similarities, they are both media players.

In fact, read that thread in general. All these comments should probably have been directed there. There are major factions in the songbird camp who have all come from using different players before. There are people who want sb to be more like iTunes, people who want it to be less like iTunes, people who want it to be more like Winamp, less like winamp, more like WMP, less like WMP, more like amarok, less like amarok, more like media monkey.....yada yada yada.There are even people who want it to be completely different from everything and still more people who want it to be exactly the same as everything. Well, add-ons and featheres will mean most of them are hopfully satisfied one day!
