Go away PowerPC users!
I really enjoy using Songbird in my PowerBook G4 and the only thing that was missing was the smart playlists. Finally I saw that builders added this function to Songbird but they made the program only for Intel based Macs. I think that it is a shame for the open source community to impede PowerPC users to use this fantastic program.

Inappropriate? This was a hard and controversial decision. There is still community support for PPC users, and I believe there are members of the community that continue to build the PPC version of Songbird. I am not sure who or where you can get those builds. I will see if I can get someone to point you in the right direction.
-
Inappropriate?Just had a chat with our Developer Communications guy and he said there are no community builds of PPC yet. It will be a rather complex process to get PPC builds up and running since GStreamer would need to be ported to PPC. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do. Sorry.

Inappropriate?I'm truly sorry to hear this answer. I know that the passage to Intel CPU's would create many complications for the programs but I was hoping that my PPC computer could go on for other years and now I'm realizing that it is approaching its end.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Sadly, yes, PPC is going the way of the dodo. Even Apple is dropping PPC with the next version of OS X.
Sorry that I can't be of more help.

I'm running the latest version of Mac OS X on a PowerPC iBook. Snow Leopard will also support PowerPC. So what you're saing is nonsense -
There's been no confirmation either way that Snow Leopard will or will not support PPC, so this is a really poor excuse. -
G'day,
It been publically confirmed now 100% that Snow Leopard will NOT support PPC. http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html (which is what every ADC member expected anyway). -
Inappropriate?I think with the recent developments of Wine ( for running Windows-progs in Linux) Ubuntu is really worth a look. It's a little pain in the ass to run a dual boot but I think if you only run Linux it would work pretty well.
I like my Mac but Apple does more and more things I really can not agree with. Their designs are still classy and OSX one of the better OS's out there but in the end their iPhone (there is a reason why hacked one's are called "prison breaked") and iPod (the (almost) inabillity to share music with friends) politics really pisses me off.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? Why would you run Songbird in Wine when we both provide and fully support a Linux version of Songbird? Perhaps I missed the point...
-
Inappropriate?Would running linux on a powerpc mac fix the problem though? I thought the issue was with the architecture, not the operating system. Similar to how there is no flash in linux for ppc.
You can't use wine in PPC linux either, though. Only works on x86 processors. -
No...We only build/support Linux i686 and x86_64 -
yeah, that's pretty much what I figured. -
Inappropriate? As stated earlier, the largest stumbling block with PPC is getting GStreamer ported over. The remaining Songbird code would most likely work fairly easily.

Inappropriate?old topic... i couldn't find any builds for ubuntu ppc, but i did create a .deb from a ppc rpm if anyone cares... installed fine, and everything works with gstreamer and plugins installed...
I’m freakin' stoked... time to test the ipod...

Inappropriate?I will NOT go away! why should I buy a new computer that i can NOT afford in this economy just to use songbird!!!!!!!!! You Go away songbird.

G'day,
Firstly, OSX 10.6 will NOT support PPC. Which means that the only way to get PPC support from any new OS now is Linux. PPC is a dying platform, and since Applecare is ending on the rest of them now, Apple will try to slug users with rediculous repair costs to force them to upgrade.
Secondly, PPC was never that popular. Developing programs isn't free, it takes a lot of time to do, and developers need to be paid. Considering the tiny population of PPC users (even 3 years ago), PPC doesn't have many profit returns. Songbird would generate more profit by instead focusing those resources on bug fixes and features.
Finally, I worked with an Applecentre, and secretly, we both know the Apple computer you paid for cost a lot more then any PC at the time (I used to own a powermac). In fact, plenty of Apple users chose to buy PPC (at Apple's inflated prices) even during the transition. The announcement was made 4 years ago, and lets face it, many of the PPC computers had reliability issues.
Furthermore, most of our customers at the time obviously weren't poor. Even Apple's cheapest laptop with education pricing was 33% more expensive at least then dell! You'll find that there is a much higher proportion of poor users on the intel platform.
Either way, it is not feasible to support pour development money into supporting Songbird development on a platform with barely any users, and whose userbase is rapidly shrinking.
Sorry, but whilst Songbird's decision isn't great for everyone, its for the greater good (PS, this is my opinion, I am not part of POTI).
