Google Quick Search Box plugin for Songbird
People have asked about a Quicksilver module for Songbird, and I was always a Quicksilver fan, so I would have liked to have seen one as well. However, Quicksilver has not been updated in a long time, and today Google officially released a similar program called Quick Search Box that is actually developed by the developer of Quicksilver, Nicholas Jitkoff. It lets you launch applications and search for things on your computer or on the web quickly, but it also supports plugins so that it can perform other actions.
It comes with an iTunes plugin by default that lets you search for a song, album, or artist and play it, so it would be great if someone also made a Songbird plugin for it. Aside from enabling you to search for something in your library from any program and play it quickly, it could also support other commands. It could let you pause or go to a previous or next track, add a track to your now playing list, even quickly search for a lyric or tab if you have the LyricMaster or Birdtabs add-ons. And since Quick Search Bar is being developed for Windows too, more people could make use of it than they could a Quicksilver module.

I took some screenshots to show what it can do with iTunes by default. You can type in an artist, album, song, or playlist name, and then play them, or use the over arrows to navigate to more options, such as adding the songs to its DJ list.

It is possible to make plugins so that the Quick Search Bar can interact with other programs, so I just thought it would be neat if someone made it have this same functionality with Songbird. It probably also digs into the iTunes database to make it possible.

Inappropriate? But GeekShadow, you can only use Ubiquity when you are inside of Songbird, right? I thought the GSB might be useful because it works globally, like Quicksilver did. It's like a system-wide Ubiquity. I run Songbird in OSX though, which doesn't support global hotkeys, so I'm not sure if there is a way you can call Ubiquity up outside of Songbird with a global hotkey.

Inappropriate?GSB is like a launchy/executor thing for OS X right? It would be pretty cool to have global shortcut functionality for sb, especially now that performance is improving so much and memory usage seems to be stabilizing. What's the system resources footprint on GSB like?
-
Inappropriate? That's exactly what it is. And I accidentally typed GSB before and I think it is actually QSB. It is just like Quicksilver and LaunchBar, which let you search for files and programs. It can also perform actions on a file rather than just launching it, and it can do little things like give calculations or word definitions quickly.
I took a screenshot of activity monitor so you could see it performing:

I'm not exactly sure what effect memory usage has versus CPU usage. It does use some CPU when you are performing a search with it.
And I also hope for global hotkeys for Songbird in all operating systems. I do not see it listed on the road map at all, so I hope they sneak it into Jackson 5 or some not-too-far-off release. -
Agreed. Have you played with the current global hotkeys? or are they just windows-specific? ...I'm so ignorant of the world outside XP (ie most of it)... -
Inappropriate? If I understand you want QSB to search songs inside Songbird's Library ?
To do this, QSB need to dig the library database and to run Songbird with the file. -

Inappropriate?I would deeply, deeply adore this, and building it in QSB wouldn't be too hard -- but we need to get command-line control of Songbird (or some other way of communicating with the running application, like dcop) in order to do so. Command line controls (songbird -play, songbird -stop, etc.) work on Linux and Windows (?!) but not on OS X, at least not last time I checked. And no one on the Songbird team seems to have any desire to see it fixed.
