Help people fit Songbird to their needs with add-ons
I made a post about this in another topic a while ago and I wanted to expand on it because I think it could really be useful.
When installing Songbird, you are prompted with a list of recommended add-ons to install. I think this is a great idea, because some people either don't know enough about add-ons to seek them out and install them, and others would just never discover great add-ons like Concerts or mashTape otherwise.
I was inspired by Fashion Your Firefox, which provides Firefox users with several categories to easily find add-ons that suit their interests, and thought that this would be perfect for Songbird. There are several main ways categories that I think many users customizing Songbird fit into, and for this mock-up, I made them: people who want Songbird to be more like iTunes, people who want Songbird to do more with the web, people who want to customize the look of Songbird, and people who want more powerful media player features.
Rather than showing the user recommended add-ons during the install, this page could greet the user when they open Songbird for the first time, and it would be a great way to help someone quickly fit Songbird to his or her needs. For the mock-up I tried to pick the add-ons that I thought people would use the most and keep it simple. Maybe it would look better if at first if the categories were collapsed and the user could click on one to expand it. This page could also be linked to on the add-ons page so people could return to it if they wanted an easier way to find add-ons. Plus, it would introduce people to the lovable Songbird mascot right off the bat. :D

Inappropriate?A wonderful idea. Although, some problems arise. Some add-ons are OS specific, so it would kind of suck for a Mac user (like me) to eagerly click on the "Album Grid Media View" link, (which I assume is "Griddy") only to find that I can't install it because it's not compatible with my OS.
Songbird version compatibility would raise the same issue, so the page you suggest would have to be a "Smart Add-on List" that only shows add-ons compatible with your OS and your SB version.

Thanks you guys. This was just meant to be hypothetical for now because some of the add-ons aren't available yet, like video and ripping/burning support. I don't think there is an album art media view that performs well enough yet either, but I think eventually Album View will. Hopefully in a while all of the add-ons listed there will exist, perform well, and work on both OS's (I'm a Mac user too).
You are right about version compatibility- I'm not sure how Fashion Your Firefox deals with it. Most people should be running the newest version anyway, so maybe there could just be a message under incompatible add-ons saying that the user needs to update the program for them to be available.
And I was so excited to post this when I finished it today, I totally didn't notice that I forgot to put a button to install the selected add-ons! Everyone just imagine it is there for now. -

Inappropriate?Fantastic idea. I think a lot of people (including myself) forget about the add-ons. Why? Not sure really, but maybe it is because we are not used to so much freedom in media players and our mindset is stuck in the ways of iTunes, WMP etc.

Inappropriate?Looks great! It surely should be realized and the choice should be given before importing media or a user might think that Songbird ain`t a powerful tool!..
