I get the "plugin missing" window whenever I try to view sites using Flash. How can I view Flash websites with Songbird?

We recently had a bug opened that made us realize that the current Windows instructions are outdated.
http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show...
A paraphrase of my comments in the bug:
The version of the Flash add-on linked to in Get Satisfaction is too old to be used with either Songbird or current versions of Firefox.
The Mozilla/Firefox has changed the method that add-on installation uses, and
this add-on uses the older method. (install.js instead of the current install.rdf method)
Your best bet is to go directly to Adobe's home page and install the current
Flash player.
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
I've confirmed that this works with my own copy of Songbird in Windows XP

Under Windows:
Open Songbird and paste "http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/xpi/current/flashplayer-win.xpi" in the location bar at the top of the library or browser. Follow the installation process.
Under Linux:
Flash on Linux got a whole lot better with Flash Player 9. Go to the Macromedia site, and download Flash 9 for Linux. Decompress the .tar.gz file. If you run the installer - it will install the plugin for supported web browsers (Firefox, Mozilla, etc.), but it will not auto-detect Songbird. To install it for Songbird, copy the libflashplayer.so to your Songbird application folder's <tt>plugins</tt> directory. So if you have Songbird installed in ~/Songbird, copy it to ~/Songbird/plugins. Similarly, copy flashplayer.xpt to your Songbird application folder's <tt>components</tt> directory. Restart Songbird, and you should be back in business!

Inappropriate?I am using Ubuntu 8.04 64bit. I also have flash 10 beta installed. I just copied the plugins from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins to my Songbird/plugins folder changed permissions on npwrapperlibflashplayer.so and it works great.

Inappropriate?does this need to be done from an administrator's account? just curious.
-
Inappropriate?I copied everything in nautilus but I did use nautilus in root to change the permissions for npwrapperlibflashplayer.so, however, I have tried it without changing the permissions and it still works. I would just open up a file browser, and copy them over and see what happens, if it doesn't work then go into a root nautilus and change the permissions.
-
Inappropriate?and... for 64-bit linux?
-
Inappropriate?I am using 64 bit, If you have Flash installed in 64bit Ubuntu, just copy it over. This Ubuntu forums thread might help, it is for fixing pulse audio issues but it will also install Flashplayer 10. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.ph...
-
Inappropriate? Here's a screenshot of Songbird showing the Adobe Flashplayer webpage. I installed Songbird from GetDeb's deb file for 64bit Ubuntu 8.04, it is installed in /usr/share/Songbird. You must use a root file manager. (gksudo nautilus) copy npwrapper.libflashplayer.so from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, to /usr/share/Songbird/plugins.

Thanks mate, this solved the problem, much appreciated. -
Thank you - I did as you suggested and it works U9.1AMD64G with newest Songbird installed manually in home folder... -
Inappropriate?I have Ubuntu 8.04 and WindowsXP in dual boot.
sudo find / -iname flashplayer.xpt
/media/WinC/WINDOWS/system32/Macromed/Flash/flashplayer.xpt
I mean I found no flashplayer.xpt in my Linux installation... should I copy it from my Windows installation?
NOTES: I just created a symbolic link from
/usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so
since I had already Flash Player installed and working on Firefox 3 for Ubuntu. -
Inappropriate?Flash for Windows is not the same as flash for Linux, In Ubuntu flash is in the repos, and is installed if you install Ubuntu Restricted Extras in Add/Remove> then you can either copy the flash plugin from Firefox or create a symbolic link as you did.
-
Inappropriate?cjm5229 I think I installed Flash manually and as I said I didn't find that flashplayer.xpt to make that sym link.
Now, following what you say, I'll install that Ubuntu Restricted Extra from Add/Remove and try to find that flashplayer.xpt -
Inappropriate? It won't be flashplayer.xpt it will be flashplayer.so. .xpt is a windows extension not used in Linux
-
Inappropriate?hi today adobe installer prompted me to install the update and after that, i can't seem to watch any flash player on songbird even after i uninstalled and reinstalled adobe player and songbird. if adobe player is installed, it can be run on internet explorer but not songbird. i tried using the method as stated above, it shows the installation process but disappeared once the installation is completed, i think it's not compatible with songbird v7? i'm using window xp, songbird v7
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? For some reason it doesn't prompt to restart at the end.
try to install .xpi file
"http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/xpi/current/flashplayer-win.xpi
and manually restart the application using Tools -> Restart. -
Inappropriate?it still doesn't work. by the way, there's no tool > restart in v7 i had to manually close and restart songbird.
-
Inappropriate?I would suggest, try to create a new profile by going to All Programs-Songbird-Songbird(Profile Manager).
See if flash player works with a clean profiel.
Don't install flash updates, when prompted. -
Inappropriate?hi i'm typing this using the new profile i've created and sadly, this solution doesn't work :( i'm still facing the flash problem

Inappropriate? In ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (8.10) I had some issues integrating flash player in Songbird. This solved my problem:
When youtube is working nicely in Firefox just copy the contents of /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
to /usr/share/Songbird/plugins and use a terminal to start a root nautilus with
gksu nautilus
and use that to change all permissions so that every user may read the files and may execute the files.
One thing isn't working yet and that's full screen youtube viewing. It crashes Songbird so heavily that a restart of ubuntu is necessary. -
Inappropriate?Jeroen,
Thanks for your report.
Video support in Songbird is not completely done yet/.
I will check full screen YouTube issue and follow up here. -
Inappropriate? If you guys are using the new flash 10, libflashplayer.so is located in /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/
Copy that into the songbird plugins folder (I installed with getdeb so its in /usr/share/Songbird/plugins)
sudo cp /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/libflashplayer.so /usr/share/Songbird/plugins/
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Everyone is sticking to this story about the link to the xpi. It does not work.
Songbird cannot find the installer, no matter what you do.
I even broke the xpi down into its parts and manually copied the dll, js,and xpt into various directories to try, but to no avail.
I’m frustrated
-
same here. it says: install script not found -204 -
Exactly, same to me. No way to install in WinXP, it doesn't find the script. You can't override it. -
Inappropriate?rd,
Are you trying to install flash in Windows or Ubuntu? If it is Windows just go to the flashplayer site in Songbird and try installing it from there. If it is Ubuntu, you are trying to install the Windows version of Flash and that won't work. Go to Flashplayer Website and download the correct file, (they now have a deb file), and install that. I have the new Flash 10 64bit alpha installed in Ubuntu and it works great in Songbird. Make sure you have updated Songbird to version 1.0
I have it in both my Windows and my Ubuntu computers and flash is working great in both. -
Inappropriate? Thanks. After a dozen tries, and I can't explain why, but flash is working in my Vista.
In firefox, the plugin directory reveals your adobe plugins, but the extension directory in songbird does not show flash as installed...so I might have had it working, but didn't know it, until I went to a flash test page to see it working. A plugin directory might be a nice addition to songbird later.
Thanks all for the help.

Inappropriate? The way I installed flash and/or shockwave player(s) was to visit FileHippo.com and use the manual installation files, it was really easy.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?HEY, what about us "red headed step child" Mac lovers????? No flash also!!!!!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Doesn't work, neither FileHippo.com nor XPI install.
I suspect it's because I got Firefox installed as well.
Normal flash installer ask me to close firefox, and if I don't close Songbird it's stuck. So seems like it sees a "firefox" task running (the reason is obvious, same mozilla engine), and asks to close it.
But after this, it goes straight to install data in REAL firefox directory. For the installer Firefox can be only itself, not a spin-off with a different name. :-D
Anyway, my real problem is that actually I got flash features in Songbird, I mean I can see flash movies.
But add-ons using Flash don't work, for instance lastfmSidebar, see http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/...
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?install flash and then search for NPSWF32.dll on your computer and paste it into the plugins folder of the main songbird folder
-
Works, but in "lib" folder (!), not the "plugins" one. -
Inappropriate?Under Windows:
Open Songbird and paste "http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/xpi/current/flashplayer-win.xpi" in the location bar at the top of the library or browser. Follow the installation process.

- To install it for Songbird, copy the libflashplayer.so to your Songbird application folder's plugins directory. (So if you have Songbird installed in ~/Songbird, copy it to ~/Songbird/plugins. Similarly, copy flashplayer.xpt to your Songbird application folder's components directory.)
- Restart Songbird, and you should be back in business!

Flash player 10 is already out for linux. You may want to link to that -
Doesn't seem to be working for me under Windows. Going to that URL and running the install yields the message:
"Songbird could not install the file at
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/...
because: Install script not found
-204" -
Inappropriate? Here is exactly what I did on Ubuntu 9.04 to get Flash working in Songbird. I already had Flash 10 installed and working with Firefox.*
1. Open terminal
2. Find flashplayer:
$ locate libflashplayer
This returned:
/usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/libflashplayer.so
3. Fing Songbird plugins:
$ locate Songbird/plugins
This returned
/opt/Songbird/plugins
4. Copy libflashplayer to the songbird plugin folder as found in steps 2 and 3:
$ sudo cp /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/libflashplayer.so /opt/Songbird/plugins/libflashplayer.so
5. Restart Songbird.
*(to install Flash: in Synaptics Package Manager I uninstalled the swfdeck free alternative that wasn't working; went to the Adobe site and downloaded Flash for Linux; unpacked and installed it. also see instructions from Adobe)
-
I had to copy "/var/lib/flashplugin-installer/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so" to "/usr/share/Songbird/plugins/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so" (please note prefix "npwrapper" in the filename). -
Inappropriate?Greetingz!
In Linux it suffices to make a link for just /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so (default location in Ubuntu) in the Songbird application folder's plugins directory (Songbird/plugins).
By using a link, the plugin gets automatically updated when the main Flash plugin package gets updated.
I did it manually here and works like a charm.
Of course, when the developers make the app detect the plugin automatically, this is no longer needed.
I’m feeling it could be better

Inappropriate?I'm using the contributed build of Songbird for Fedora 11 and today upgraded to Linux 64-bit via the Adobe Labs site. I'm either blind or the way Fedora files things is vastly different to Ubuntu etc; I have a ~/.songbird2 with no plugins directory and when I use the locate command, the only thing that comes up is in /usr/lib64 so I tried copying the flahplugin.so to the plugins directory there - songbird still closes (when using mashtape - disabling that makes songbird work). So where is Fedora keeping Songbird/plugins?
I’m frustrated
-
@Geoff, you put it in the Songbird installation folder itself, not the user preferences folder.. you should see a plugin folder there.
