I just installed Songbird in Ubuntu and it was relatively painless, I used the recommended step one from above:
1) download tar.gz from Songbird website
2) Manually move tar.gz to your home folder (it should be the folder with your name)
3) Extract the tar.gz by right clicking and choosing "extract here"
4) Right click your desktop and choose "Create Launcher"
5) Name it whatever you want, enter "Songbird/songbird" (no quotes) into the command field and choose the image you want to use to represent Songbird by clicking the image onto the left and navigating to the little bird image in home/Songbird file.
This should create a launcher that get Songbird up and running

Inappropriate? The best way is, to just download the tar.gz from the official download site and just unpack it into your Home-Folder. Then just execute the file "songbird" (or better create a shortcut for it in the menu).
An other way is, to download a deb-installer from http://www.getdeb.net/ and just execute the installer.
But I do highly recommend to do it the first way (just unpack to users home path)! Because you can get problems (with updating for example), if you do it the second way.

Is that supposed to be an answer? If I knew how to "just execute" files I wouldn't be asking how to install a tar.gz file. I've been working with Linux for over a year and I still haven't gotten a good answer for installing tar balls. How about spelling it out for those of us who don't know how to "just execute" files. BTW, just check out the "mood in here", then quit being so obtuse and frustrating. -
Inappropriate?I'll also add that many packages have had all kinds of random issues (not only upgrading).
Suse apparently had one which for most people (maybe all), didn't even use the correct program to start, and I too have had MANY people tell me they were having issues with packages.
So #1 ftw. But if you do go #2 (because its a tad less painful), and have issues, there is nothing stopping you going to #1 later.
Although, I am also thinking I may look into an autopackage that simply extracts the tar.gz into a persons home directory, and add a menu item. If it used the original tar.gz, I guess there could be no harm, and may help users a bit (one might exist already anyway). -

its not work im trying to extract but it faild what can i do -
Inappropriate?I am running ubuntu 9.04 and when I unpack the tarball to my home bin directory and try executing it no gui comes up and it complains about gstreamer. Any thoughts on how to remedy this? Also, perhaps it would be better to install it to a more canonical location (i.e. /usr/local) I tried this and the file permissions are all messed up when you extract the tarball as root. This app looks like it has so much potential but right now is completely broken for me!
I’m frustrated
-
Have you checked, if you have all the requirements installed? glibc 2.3.4 or later, and the other things? -
Inappropriate?G'day, just checking if you ever managed to get things working? :(
It may also be worth giving the 1.2 beta a go if you are still having probs (it seems to be backwards compatible with 1.1.2 anyway):

Inappropriate?I've followed the steps here.
untarred it into my homedirectory
edited applications menu and added Songbird (i don't want a launcher on Desktop or panels) and put 'songbird' in the command dialog, BUT it doesn't launch.
Also tried opening the bin file inside the sonbird folder with 'sh' but that didn't work either.
@atreiu i'd like to second joe. I can understand his frustration. Telling someone to just 'execute' something... you might as well tell them to "just do it already"
I'm sure you mean well, but if you're going to take the time to answer a question then take the time to do it. Break it down into clear baby steps.
Thank You for your patience

Hey, have you tried using the command "Songbird/songbird" instead of just "songbird", that might fix the problem. Let me know. -
yes, i put the whole path: /home/username/Songbird/songbird
It now works...
The other problem is i had followed another script on ubuntuforums and this created further conflicts and so had to be sure to have removed everything from the system in order to start fresh again.
All is good now
thank you.
PS I've noticed that installing from the tarball leaves the Egg icon in the Menu list whereas those installing the deb are left with the yellow bird in their menu list.
As it happens iwent and got the oldskool blackbird with headphones and replaced the egg icon. But if i call up Songbird with gnome-do the egg icon is still there. no biggy though -
Inappropriate?I followed the instructions given by Dan the Man (Thanks!) and it worked flawlessly. I am a newbie to Ubuntu, but by following the directions, Songbird installed and works perfectly. I am running Ubuntu 9.04 on a Lenovo Thinkpad R61p.
I’m happy

Viisiix is right, thats the easiest way :D
Just keep in mind that debs are notorious for having weird issues.. So if you have any weird problems, don't be surprised if the deb is causing it (just letting you guys know now, because I've seen every weird issue known to man coming from unofficial packages) -
Inappropriate?then why its not working with me help

Inappropriate?Total newbie when it comes to Ubuntu/Linux. Have spent the better part of 3 hours trying to get Songbird to install. All I have to show for it is a couple of more grey hairs. When i follow the steps above nothing happens. No error no indication that a program is launching. What am i doing wrong?
I’m confused

I have the same problem with Ubuntu 9.04. I created the launcher, as suggested by "Dan The Man", but it does not work. When I double click it nothing happens.
What can I do ? -
I had a similar problem and found the solution in a note on http://www.getdeb.net/release/4461
As soon as I removed the libvisual-0.4-plugins package, songbird suddenly worked fine. -

I agree with Lynx regarding downloading Songbird 1.2.0 from the GetDeb website: http://www.getdeb.net/app/Songbird
You'll need to remove the libvisual-0.4-plugins before you actually install Songbird. this is done by going to System, Administration, Synaptic Package Manager, put your password in, once it opens up, goto the search field and enter libvisual-0.4-plugins. Once you see the results for this, place cursor over the small green box, then right click and select Mark For Complete Removal, then click Apply.. Once that has done you'll be able to come out of Synaptic Package Manager and then you can install Songbird. -

Just an update, some of the devs think that the libvisual problem occurs due to a compatibility problem when using the official Nvidia drivers.
I'd generally only suggest removing Libvisual Songbird wont start-up, because many users will be able to run Songbird fine without doing so. -
Right! Removing this lib really helped. Thanks guys! Quite a player, I like it. Audacious is a bit boring :^) -
Inappropriate?I actually think an official Autopackage should be made..
