How do I synchronize Songbird's database files between two (Linux) computers using Unison?
How do I synchronize Songbird's database files between two computers using Unison? I'm using two computers (a desktop and a laptop) with synchronized music folders so the same thing is on both systems. With other Mozilla products (firefox, sunbird) I've been able to get away with synchronizing personal data by going into, for example, the .mozilla/profiles.ini and changing the Path=<randomletters>.default to Path=John.default, and then renaming the corresponding folder under .mozilla/<randomletters>.default to .mozilla/John.default on both computers. Then when I sync (using a program called Unison) the two folders on the two computers, my personal data is shared between the two.
I tried the same thing under .songbird2/profiles.ini on both my computers and it did not work:( instead when I start up songbird it rewrites the folder .songbird2/<randomletters>.default with a new database, and doesn't try to open the folder .songbird2/John.default. Am I barking up the wrong tree here? Is there something else that I should change? Or if someone could explain how Songbird handles the database files that'd be pretty awesome too. I really want to share the songbird database between these two computers.</randomletters></randomletters></randomletters>

Inappropriate?Try running the Songbird profile manager, "songbird -p", and creating a new profile called 'John' (or whatever) on both computers and then try syncing the two folders. As Songbird does not like when those folder names change without it knowing.. Lets see if that works....

Inappropriate?Brilliant! Thank you boosh, that totally answered my question (sort of). What you want to do is run songbird -ProfileManager and do exactly what you did, or perhaps songbird -p does the same thing. But yes, making profiles with the same name will make folders that have the same random lettering which house all the important stuff. For those interested in using this method I've documented the full setup on my blog which is linked below (shameless plug).
