How do you mount an MTP device?
I know this is the noobiest of the noob questions, but I can't seem to get my MTP device mounted in Songbird. I've got it plugged in, tried reconnecting, etc. Is Songbird supposed to automatically detect MTP devices when they are connected? I can't seem to find a command in Songbird to mount the MTP device... what am I missing?
For the record, I'm using a Creative Zen Micro with a firmware update that gives it MTP support.
Thanks for the help!

Inappropriate?Hello,
I was confronted with the same problem. I found an addon, which (hopefully) solves your problem, here: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/172, make sure you have XP SP2 or above, AND Windows Media Player 11.
After installing WMP11, the MTP support worked like a charm. I can now add music onto my (old) Creative Zen Sleek! -
Ok, now that I have WMP 11 and I have XP SP2 and the MTP addon, how do I transfer music to my MTP device? -
Inappropriate? Are you serious? Why would I want WMP11... If I have to use that I wouldn't need Songbird, now would I?
Why is there no native songbird MTP support? I'd think it would be important enough to be a priority with so much other stuff working fine.
Between no native MTP device support (I downloaded the module but there's no way I am gonna download WMP11 just to use Songbird with my MTP device (SansaFuze)) and database issues, I guess I will look for another replacement for WinAmp's bloatware, WMP's Bloatware.. and Songbird was looking so promising..
Maybe I will get an email when this issue is resolved.. till then, Songbird goes off my recommended list for my friends and family... and off my computer.
Thanks for trying guys... it really is appreciated.

Inappropriate?Hi all -
If you're using the 1.2 release of Songbird, MTP should be working..... You can check by going to Tools > Add-Ons; it should be in the list. However, there have been a number of issues with syncing to devices (both MTP and MSC), some of which have been fixed in later builds. If you're willing to try a reasonably-stable beta, you can use build 1332. Please note, though, that you'll have to download the add-ons from that page as well!
Hope that helps!

Inappropriate?Hello,
I am willing to try it in Beta, though what I want to know is if the Beta version has native MTP support without requiring WMP11 (That will never be an option for me, or if it were I would have no need of Songbird, as somebody else pointed out)
I have been forced to keep WinAmp installed for now, because it does work, even if I don't like it's current interface and sluggish performance.
I guess I will install the Beta and see, as it is already downloaded and sitting waiting...
I will immediately come back and tell everyone if it works natively with my Sansa Fuze 8GB... Wish me luck, everyone....
Thanks to all the coders who have been working hard to try to make Songbird another fine Mozilla product.

Inappropriate?Installing the few compatible addons the beta supports at this time...
I see a new mass storage driver.. I can at least use that if I change my Sansa Fuze's connection type... But let's hope MTP works instead..
I do see the Obsidian skin now re-sizes correctly... under 1.2 when you went to drag the bottom to expand the height the entire songbird window would actually shrink and not allow expansion...
Good news guys and gals, while playing part of my playlist I was able to transfer whatever I selected in MTP mode to my Sansa Fuze 8GB without needing to install WMP11 (or any WMP version for that matter)
I even tried holding shift <multi-select> and selecting most of my favorites and every last one transferred when I then right clicked on the last selected file and chose "Add to device>Sansa Fuze" from the context menu that opened on the right click.
Well, that is solved for the moment! Thanks Mari, for pointing me towards a solution that works!
Now for the bad news: I started the Beta a few times and it is noticably slower than 1.2 (as in almost double the load time) running under Windows XP Pro SP3 on a dual core (T2050) system with 1GB RAM... I sometimes run VMWare Workstation or Adobe Premier on this system, so I know it is not just a slow system.
I defragged my hard drive a few days ago after deleting many GB's of Premier's conformed files and obsolete versions of commercials I have authored for a TV station I work for.
I see Songbird uses 111MB of RAM upon load at this point... This seems like quite a bit for a media player. By comparison WinAmp uses between 24 and 80MB (but I still don't like it's interface as much as Songbird's)
Hopefully programmers will find a way to trim the fat, so to speak... this should help with load times and shut down times... though Songbird appears to close, it takes almost a full minute to truly close while it does it's housecleaning. (This is really OK, assuming it will one day shrink to a reasonable size which in turn should make it noticeably faster)
One other note that is somewhat disappointing... Upon first installing the Beta it searched for media files and I see a few text documents listed in teh library now... they are obviously not music or music related...
Could not determine the media type of the file or stream (file:///e:/documents%20and%20settings/bdp2/my%20documents/my%20music/songbird%20music/unknown%20artist/unknown%20album/tech.doc).
Could not determine the media type of the file or stream (file:///e:/documents%20and%20settings/bdp2/my%20documents/my%20music/songbird%20music/unknown%20artist/unknown%20album/st3.doc).
These are text files in my directory of MOD/S3M/XM music modules that describe the format (There's also an authoring program where Songbird found those files and copied them from, but it did not copy the executables or any batch files (.bat))
Still, not bad for Beta software, and better than many Beta's...
If I notice anything else I will be sure to post it.
I am confident that the programmers will be able to make great headway in slimming down the application's memory footprint, media locating routines, and maybe even file compatibility one day soon. (Personally I like my XM, S3m, and Mod files still)
Lucky I have a good player for them that doesn't hog resources and can even make mp3 files if I like...
Thanks again for your help, Mari!
Thanks to the Dev Team, Mozilla projects, and everyone else who has helped make these useful products..

I’m confident for sure!

Thanks so much for your kind words! ^_^ I'll pass them along to the devs.
As for the memory-usage issue, there is a GetSat topic and a bug, if you would like to be able to follow the progress on either.
As for the issue of text files in the library, I think something similar was logged in bugzilla, but can't find it right now. If you happen across it, feel free to add your comments, along with your OS and version of Songbird.
Thanks again for the feedback, and we're glad to have you in the flock! ^_^ -
