Inappropriate? You can download a deb file from http://www.getdeb.net/app/Songbird. Here you will find the latest songbird version. What I did was first removing the old deb in synaptic and then I installed the new one. As far as I know you can't update songbird if you installed it via a deb file. If you want your old profile back in the new version you need to backup your profile first.
If there is another way to update, please let me know.
But songbird 1.2.0 didn't work on ubuntu 9.04 for me, so I installed the old version again.
I’m undecided

Inappropriate?Hey guys!
I was once scared by tarballs.. but its really not that bad... all you have to do is extract it to a place somewhere safe (like your home directory).. and you're good to go! All you have to do is run the songbird file from inside... The problem with debs (besides the fact that its not maintained by us) is that it (usually) installs in a place where you do not have permissions.. so in order to update it you need to run it in root (or sudo permissions)..
If you use the tarball from the Songbird website, you will automatically get prompted of updates that come..

Michael, this seems easy enough when installing for the first time. What if we already have a previous version of Songbird in our Home folder? Will I then have two Songbird folders? Will the first be overwritten? What about my profile, extensions, etc.? -
Go to Help > Check For Updates... And you should get it (If its greyed out, that means you have bad permissions somewhere)... This will replace and update your previous files in your Songbird folder.
You can also download another Songbird, delete your previous Songbird installation folder, and put the new one in your home directory, and Songbird will automatically upgrade your library database to the 1.2.
All your customizations will still be carried over, the profiles are stored in the ".Songbird2" folder, and it will recognize that there is a profile there (if there is one there) when you start your updated Songbird. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not scared by tarballs, I just didn't know how to go about and whether that was going to create some conflicts. Yet, it's true that it's easier to deal with debs and packages, you just go by menus.
Greetings, CM
I’m thankful
