There is an existing bug open for improved podcast support within Songbird here.
I have added this topic and me too's to that thread. To track the comments on this work item:
1. Go to the "people" box in the upper right hand corner of bug # 10160;
2. Add your email in the "add cc" box;
3. Scroll down and hit commit.
If you don't have a free bugzilla account, signing up is quick and easy and will allow you to share your feedback directly with the development team.

I've just created a little hack which may help.
The two main problems I've encountered are that some RSS feeds just won't work at all (e.g. National Public Radio in the US), plus Songbird will try to download every episode in a feed, rather than just the most recent one.
This should solve both problems for you:

Hope it helps!!

Inappropriate?I am having this same issue, often the pages that you go to never give you the proper url for the feed. Help with this would be really appreciated!
I’m blah

Inappropriate?I've subscribed to this podcast feed:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/BiggSucce...
But nothing is showed... -
Inappropriate?i just dont know how to get podcasts in songbird, ive tried opening subscriptions to the podcasts with songbird and it doesnt work
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Songbird's podcast engine is not yet very advanced. You can register to your podcasts using File > New Subscription. When prompted for the URL, enter the Podcast's RSS feed. For instance, if you'd want to subscribe to TWiT, the URL would be: http://leoville.tv/podcasts/twit.xml
However, for some reasons, some RSS Feed simply do not work. I have tried subscribing to Buzz Out Loud and No Agenda, and even though I entered the correct RSS feed URL, it didn't work.
I am sure an upcoming version would provide better podcasting features.

Inappropriate?I have figured out how to add a podcast to songbird, but it won't sync with my ipod. All my music syncs, but the podcasts don't. Any suggestions???

Inappropriate?Podcast support needs to be improved. As well as the ability to organize them and not just mix feeds into the playlist section.

I notice the existing bug only has three votes at the moment, one of which is me. I suggest people not only add themselves to the CC box, but also vote for the bug. Does that make sense? -
Good point sophware. -
Added, and voted. -
Inappropriate?Part of the problem lies with the content creators. Since most users use iTunes many content creators just add an iTunes link but neglect to share the full URI for other feed readers.

Interesting point! -
I disagree. All the places I have visited have at least an rss or atom feed along with any others. -
Now we just need to get Miro the capability to sync with portable devices. -
Inappropriate?The Roadmap says that work on the subscription or podcast features are on the way in August. I am planning to just sit tight and use Banshee (I am on Ubuntu) until this gets improved. Nothing else out there does as many things and does them well, as Songbird.
You can find the roadmap here:

Wow, great work Chris, thanks! -
Thanks, it works :-) -
This is great - thanks for your efforts - would be great if there was an option on the "download recent" or "download all" (for newly found feeds!), but for a quick hack it's marvellous! I look forward to seeing the Songbird team getting it right though - it's one of the best features of the app! -
Inappropriate?I really like the way Mediamonkey handles podcast subscriptions, that's the only thing holding me back from migrating to Songbird.
Is there maybe an add-on that fixes these shortcomings?
I’m hopeful

Sorry, no. See the 2 featured answers at the top of this post for the best info we have to offer on podcast subscriptions currently. -
