Importing new music into the library
Hi.
I've been using Amarok up until I found Songbird. There is, however, one feature I really miss which Songbird (apparently) lacks: if I have a folder with a new album which hasn't been incorporated to my library yet, I would like to be able to select that folder from Songbird and let Songbird move those files to my "music" folder, sort them out (in a specific folder, such as /artist/album/artist - song.mp3) and add them to my library.
Is there anyway to do that?
If not, how can I select a folder of MP3s and import them to my library without having to rescan my WHOLE collection (I have quite a few songs and it takes a lot of time).
Thank you!

Inappropriate? There is an add-on for Songbird called "Songbird Library Organizer" that does exactly what you're requesting. Unfortunately, it's out of date and hasn't been updated since Songbird 0.4. You can put out a request in the Songbird Developer Community to see if someone will update it (or, if you're a developer, you can work on getting it up-to-speed yourself).

Inappropriate?I think there was a feature suggestion/bug for this as I seem to remember commenting on it, but after spending the last 20 minutes looking for it, I cannot for the life of me find it. Can somebody help me find it, or if it doesn't exist a new one can be opened. I just don't want to add to the list of redundant feature suggestions out there.
I’m undecided

Inappropriate?its in the feb 09 roadmap

Inappropriate?"Watch folders" is in the Feb 09 roadmap. The functionality described in this question is NOT watch folders, but media/filesystem management, which isn't even on the schedule--it is just listed as "Upcoming."
It is primarily because of this that I think the Songbird team has seriously misplaced priorities. Filesystem management is one of only 4 crucial core components to a media library system (filesystem consolidation/management, visual/db-like organization and access, media playback, and device loading/management). Songbird is currently 2.5 for 4 (device management still leaves much to be desired, to the point that I'm having to use Winamp to load 4 different music devices even though they're ALL supposedly supported).
Yet instead of getting these 4 points bolted down first, they are stalling for time with a hack like watch folders (which still leaves a lot of work in the user's hands to actually keep their data sane), and focusing their time on:
1) cosmetics such as making already clean and elegant toolbars customizeable
2) implementing CD ripping and burning which could easily and conveniently be handled by exernal applications (if, for the sake of ripped music, the filesystem were under control)
3) and features that ought to DEPEND on filesystem management like
- better music store integration
- fetching album art (which is again more cosmetically than fundamentally important)
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?im going to "yes but" you ;-p
yes but... we dont know what "watch folders" means... what if it watched a folder and moved its contents to the "main" library renaming the files along the way... done! -
We do know this much:
http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Releases...
"Watch Folders" is a scheduled item.
http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Roadmap/...
"Media Management and Consolidation" is a planned but unscheduled item and exists distinctly from "Watch Folders."
It is unlikely that watch folders would do what you are suggesting. The general understanding most media players apply to such terminology is that you put your music there and the system just recognizes that the contents of its library (a.k.a that folder), has changed. Even if it did work as you are suggesting, it would still be failing to similarly handle content dragged not into some "inbox" folder but the program itself. More critically, it would still be impossible to move EXISTING media without deleting and rebuilding the library entries from scratch, and edits to metadata in Songbird would still not be reflected in updated file organization, which would also cause further grief when imported media expects to take a path and filename that is already /erroneously/ taken. Automated filesystem control is an all or nothing proposition, and that leads me to believe watch folders cannot be more than a "read only" feature.
Proper filesystem organization and maintenance is impossible without doing the /whole/ job /properly/. Until such time as Songbird does so, I cannot really rely on it for anything, and so I've effectively abandoned my own music collection until Songbird is actually ready to do its job. In the mean time, I just use Winamp (Songbird refuses to recognize any of my devices) to load my PMPs using some good old text playlists which are, at the very least, editable. -
Inappropriate?i have created a small python script for linux users which consolidates a songbird library in a way similar to itunes:
