importing playlists creates dupes in the library
After I imported some playlists from my iPod I get to see duplicate songs in the library (as if appearing one time in the original library and second time in the playlist) so if I play the library I get to hear each song which is in a playlist played twice...
Am I missing something here? what to do?

Inappropriate? What Version of Songbird are you running?

Inappropriate? Are those files duplicated in your Library?
Like being there 2 times?
Or just in the playlists?!? Some IPod Addon freak online, who could answer me, if whilst importing a "playlist" from the Ipod the songs get downloaded from the device with that? If that is the case. And you got multiple playlists, containing partially the same songs, I guess those would get imported multiple times as well.
There are some addons like "ghostbuster" to install from the addons page of songbird. You could try that. -
Inappropriate? If you see the same song in a playlist and in a library, that would not be considered duplicates.
You get the same result, if you add files to the playlist in Songbird(without iPod).
It also adds those files to the library.
Removing files from the library will remove them from playlist as well.
Songbird allows dupes in playlists (not in a library), it possibly creates problems.
You can add the same files to the playlist, or import the same playlist twice and that will create dupes.
Did you try to import the same playlist twice?
We have a bug #9425 opened for that problem.

Inappropriate? Is this going to be fixed any time soon? Doesn't like it'd be that difficult for songbird to recognize that the track names and file paths are the same and simply merge the tracks. Importing playlists is essentially worthless because of this bug.
-
Inappropriate?Yeah, this is a pretty annoying bug.
To be clear, adding a playlist creates a duplicate of the song IN THE LIBRARY. It's in the playlist, and then there are two instance of it in the library. Annoying. Because songbird is currently unable to read ratings AT ALL (unless they were added within Songbird itself), trying to import your own ratings via playlists is a huge hassle since you have to go through and delete all the dupes manually (or using the Exorcist extension). -
Inappropriate?Just like here. Can't really migrate from Winamp to Songbird with this. For some reason Excorcist also don't really behave like it should be, can't seam to get to the bottom of the cause.
I think I've found a lead on what's causing some duplicates though. It seems Songbird is case sensitive when it comes to file paths. " D:\MP3s\song.mp3 " isn't the same as " d:\mp3s\song.mp " to Songbird. However, Winamp saves the pathnames in the exported playlists in lower case. Still that probably isn't the full cause because I've also got like 5 duplicates of the same song where like 3 have exactly the same pathnames. -
Inappropriate?I'm reposting this here because it's got a slightly more detailed description of some of the symptoms from another thread that was redirected here...
--------
Any song that is part of a playlist is being listed multiple times in my library. For instance if I use a song in two playlists, in the library it lists that song 3 times, once for the real file, and another two for each of the two playlists, and it seems to be treating them as separate files because star ratings are not consistent between them.
When viewing the file path and name, they are indeed the very same file, the only difference I notice is that files in the library that are coming from the playlist will capitalize the path, whereas all regular files in the library show a fully lower case path and file name.
This causes a problem particularly when I want to play that album from the library, the song will play multiple times because I can't filter it out by album, even worse is when I remove those duplicates from the library, it actually removes them from my playlist, I've ruined some great playlists like this and it's getting more than a little annoying.
--------
Tyler I see you've been looking into this bug for 7 months now, have you guys been able to reproduce it the way we can?
-
Inappropriate? There is also a bug filed for this.
So hopefully it will be resolved soon.

Inappropriate?I'm baffled at how such a simple fix could have been overlooked for the new release. It's not like it's actual error, more like a functional deficiency.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I agree with Clint, although I realize that there are lots of issues that need attention, it's the small ones like this that make Songbird useless to us (not to mention a now playing list, but that's another story).
I’m frustrated as well

Inappropriate?also, another annoying side-effect, which i guess makes sense
if you have your library with playlists, and therefore multiple entries, and you sync to an iPod (and i assume an mtp player also), the device ends up with multiple copies of the songs. it's just become even more rather annoying, and i'd been looking forward to syncing my ipod, as (if this gets fixed) it'll be an excellent solution in linux for ipod users.
I’m irritated.
-
oh boy...
I asked the question 8 months ago and it is still unfixed?!
I have longed ago dropped Songbird, running happily with iTunes 8... -
the side-effect i mentioned above happens, but also i think the ipod-addon catches some of them. meaning, i get a few multiples on my ipod, not all of them. this would be nice, but of course because of the playlist glitch, this means i have playlists which have barely any entries because there are barely any duplicates.
this problem really needs to get fixed, i mean, come on. it's a media player. deal with playlists.
also, nice as gtkpod is, there should be a good syncing program/media player (like itunes) for linux. this would be it but for the playlist problem. -
Inappropriate?Sticking with Rhythmbox. I feel pretty let down.
-
Inappropriate?Yep. This is still a problem. It makes things so difficult that we just have to delete and reorganize the library from scratch (since importing after delete often creates doubles again). This may be more trouble than it's worth, as Clint was saying.
-
Inappropriate? What I don't get is how the new update has a music store, but can't handle playlists normally like EVERY OTHER MEDIA PLAYER AVAILABLE? Don't get me wrong, I do want to use Songbird, but I just can't see it as even a possibility after two "final releases."
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate? And another release comes and goes... @Tylerstyle, it looks like your the resident employee here on this issue, can you confirm that this bug actually has a bug report being tracked... i.e. they know about this issue, I looked at the release notes for this hoping the problem might have been addressed finally but there's no sign of it in the known issues or otherwise.
Please update us, we anxiously await some reassurances that someones listening.
Thanks
I’m dissapointed.... again.

Inappropriate?Sorry, missed that link, that's great that there's a bug being tracked, but in reading through it, the only thing they've done is confirm the bug and refer to another similar bug that hasn't had any progress since June of 2008.
More recent notes say it still exists in the upcoming 1.2 release but there's no mention of any attention actually being paid to it. Are they actually going to escalate this in the next year.... what's the real answer here are playlists just not a priority for this media player?
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? You are a little new to the whole Open Source movement, aren't you?
You know what you do in Open Source?
You help.
Either
1.) You grab the code, better it, and take it back to the developer.
2.) If he doesn't want it, and you absolutely want to, fork it!
3.) You can't code? Go in there and file all the bugs, you can find, so that the developer knows, they're in there. Find something missing? TELL THEM. Things slowing down? Ask what's going on. Find something very importing? Say it is to you.
That's the way it works and it works like hot butter on a grilled Toast.
I’m in love with open source and free software!
-
Inappropriate? Not really, and although someone else might have resented the tone of that last post, I'm really a nice guy so I'll ignore it. I participate in several open source projects, wrong languages though, I'm not familiar enough with Mozilla's stuff to pick it up and help out directly. If you guys want help maintaining your website, I'm more than willing to take a role.
Option 3 should actually read...
3. If you can't code? Report bugs, if things slow down... the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
Avid, interested, and enthusiastic participants are an important part of Open Source, we're the ones that test all this fun code you guys put out for us, and sometimes we report back that you're doing a great job on everything and sometimes we tell you you're dropping the ball on the basics. It's meant to help, it's not just for the sake of complaining about something, which I think you're missinterpreting my previous posts to be.
I really don't mean to sound like an ass, because I love where Songbird is going, but I guess when you're trying to be heard loud enough to get the ball rolling on something important to you (and the others following this issue), it's inevitable.
People here sound pretty squeaky, but we're not getting any grease.... not even a little WD40 to tide us over.... if you catch my drift. Judging that there are only a few of us actually vocalizing it anymore, you can bet you're losing those avid interested and enthusiastic people willing to share their opinions to other platforms. Disappointing.
I’m interested in hearing something new.
-
Inappropriate? My statement was not aimed at being harsh or something.
I'm just saying, that you should voice your opinion, when you see the need to. Nothing less.
And when you're really serious about it, that you should delve deeper and see the Bug Report I mentioned earlier.
Do so, voice your concern there, and our Code Monkeys and Dogs will surely accommodate you rather sooner then later! But beware Charsiu is a ferocious dog. -
Inappropriate?I'm having the problem described above, with the result that I effectively can't import my playlists. Here's the loop I'm stuck in:
1. Import playlists.
2. Notice Library is full of duplicates.
3. Run Exorcist to eliminate duplicates.
4. Examine playlists -- they're empty!
Go back to start...
I am importing the playlists I lost (along with the rest of my profile) during a recent upgrade to 1.0.0 (Ubuntu 8.10). So they are playlists from Songbird.
Since this bug is obviously not a high priority, can anyone recommend a simple workaround for reconstructing my playlists? There has to be an easier way than copying them from screenshots. -
Inappropriate?Yet another major release, and no work at all on this issue, same annoying problems as before, when are you guys going to throw us a bone?? What's the point of adding new stuff, if you can't get the old stuff working properly??
Can't you understand how utterly frustrating it is not to be able to work on your library for fear of emptying playlists that we spend SOOOO much time perfecting???
I’m extremely dissapointed
-
Inappropriate?Yeah, I mean come on. This is only being able to MANAGE PLAYLISTS in a normal manner. We're not asking for super-special playlist powers. We just want playlists to work. Yoohoo people. Songbird's lagging behind.
I’m irked/miffed/ticked/pissed.
-
Inappropriate?agreed, this bug is a joke. I'd gladly help and have knowledge of coding but no idea where to start in the songbird source tree ... I've started looking for the applicable location to add code that flows as "read path from .m3u - is this path already in the library - Yes, use that instance or no - add a new song" this should be REALLY REALLY simple. This is the only thing I dislike about Songbird, how can a full media player handle playlists so poorly? Even iTunes finally figured this one out.
I’m fargin annoyed
-
Inappropriate?Totally agree, this is getting to the point of ridiculous. Here you've got such a great player that shows great design and care, and still, you can't properly bring your stuff in because of this tiny flaw. How couldn ́t this have been of any priority after 3 major releases? :(
I'm so eager to start using Songbird, stop teasing us!
I’m boiling my brains

Inappropriate?DOUBLE AWESOME ON YOU!!! I might finally be able to switch to SB full time now!!
I’m extatic!
-
Inappropriate?Awesome! Especially since rhythmbox got crappy, and I had to switch back to songbird anyway.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate? That's great news yeap :) gonna try and make another switch from Winamp to Songbird soon.

Inappropriate?I am hoping that the nightly builds (current Beta) are for Kanye and not Led Zepplin. I'm running 1.4.0b3 Build 1303 and this still occurs. I'd love to build the source code to test the fix since I rely heavily upon playlists but I'm on a slow connection and according to the instructions, I'd have to DL well over a gig just to build a 20 Meg app.
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate? The nightly builds are here for the Led Zeppelin release:
http://developer.songbirdnest.com/bui...
No need to build from the source code.
