In order to listen to Last.fm Radio, you must be a subscriber
Hi I updated the Last.fm add-on and I am currently getting this overlay message "In order to listen to Last.fm Radio, you must be a subscriber" which restrain access to last.fm section from Songbird.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Songbird, no success.
I am using Songbird 1.2.0 on Mac with Leo, all updated to latest version.
Thanks Alex

Hello alxndr,
This is due to Last.fm's changes in their Radio API - allowing to only stream radio to paid subscribers.
They announced back in March that they were going to make changes to their Radio API/Subscription Services:
http://blog.last.fm/2009/03/24/lastfm...
http://blog.last.fm/2009/03/30/radio-...
http://blog.last.fm/2009/04/22/radio-...
And by reading them, it could confuse users. It doesn't effect people inside the USA, UK, and Germany. But that is for their "ad-supported Web" and Official Client.
What they also announced among those blog posts were changes to their radio API:
The Future of Last.fm Radio APIs.
And external apps (third parties) are not allowed to stream radio to non-subscribers now.
You can also find the official SB bugs here:

Thanks Michael!
What if I don't want to listen the radio and only just want to search for music and listen to whatever it comes that style?
If yes, that means from Romania we can't access Last.fm from Songbird at all?
Thanks for your time
Alx -
Well, you can still scrobble your plays using the add-on and (cool part about Songbird being a web browser) you can open a new tab in Songbird and go to last.fm directly and search and discover music...
I'm not sure what you mean by listen to whatever it comes that style..?
And of course you can always subscribe ;) It's pretty inexpensive and has it's benifits... -
Thanks Michael for clarifying.
I didn't realize that playing music on last.fm by tag searching, results in creating a streaming radio (I guess this was a marketing trick). I thought that they charge only when listening to music related to artist specific radio.
Songbird is great work, and I agree with @Geoffrey Plauche and @Uncle Spellbinder that a separate scrobbling-only add on would be wonderful.
A suggestion, not related to Last.Fm, would be improving the ShoutCast by enabling the Genre selection menu by adding a All Stations option. It helps searching for a station that you know quicker, supposing you don't know what Genre belongs.
Thanks!

Inappropriate?I have no desire to subscribe, I don't use it regularly enough (although it was nice to have for free), so as it stands now Last.fm Radio is just cluttering up Songbird's interface for me. All I need is scrobbling now. I would like to see a separate Last.fm add-on just for scrobbling.
I’m sad

Couldn't agree more. I believe a separate scrobbling-only add on is a necessity. -
Inappropriate?Songbird 1.2 has broken authentication for the last.fm plugin. Reverting to songbird 1.1.2, Build 1042 (20090331142126) allows for the last.fm plugin to work as designed.
I can't scrobble my music people!!! arggghhh!!! :)

I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Songbird cannot login to last.fm to scrobble tracks. This seems to have started at the 0.4.2.1161 update. The Error Console has an error logged:
[last-fm] handshake got not enough lines: ["BADAUTH", ""]

Inappropriate? In the lastfm addon, in the right, you have panel with :
- your top artists
- your top tags
- your friends
- neighbors
Why prohibit access to all when he would be scared enough to remove the links to the radio (but not the text) for outside the U.S., UK and Germany?
I don't understand ! -
If this is really "our" artists, tags, then we let the text! -
Inappropriate?I realize that this is the first time I could not update a songbird addon.
The old version I could at least read the text. Anyway being french, I do therefore not clicked on the links radios. -
I had a comment here :

Inappropriate? My topic was inappropriately merged to this one. I am not seeing that error on my original topic.
I’m NOT HAPPY
-
Inappropriate?my problem is NOT the subscription....I am unable to have the plugin login to last.fm AT ALL...not even for scrobbling.
So, whoever merged my topic, please unmerge it...this topic and mine are completely different.
I’m STILL NOT HAPPY...AND GETTING MORE UNHAPPY THE LONGER TIME PASSES
-
I must admit that the inability to log in at all (no scrobbling) has nothing to do with the subscription/radio issue. Makes no sense that a merge of 2 completely different issues happened here. -
Inappropriate?I agree now the songbird radio part of the scrobbler should be a separate add on for sure!
unless songbird is getting a cut from last.fm

Inappropriate?Yeah, I guess "this answers the question"... as far as it goes. I still don't get why a 3rd party client using the API enforces subscription while the official client app doesn't. On the same PC I can listen to the same radio station for free using the last.fm scrobbler that will, in theory, cost $3/mo using Songbird--that's the broken part here (apart from any marketing issues). Bad software/network design on last.fm's part? Songbird's? Just a technical glitch? (It's been broken for awhile now.)
-
Inappropriate?I'm confused....I'm a non-subscriber who lives in the USA, it's telling me to subscribe within songibird. Do they have my IP confused, or do I have to buy a subscription?
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?the last.fm add on is telling me I need to pay for a subscription to use it. Last.fm is free, I will not pay $3 a month to scrobble my tracks.

Inappropriate? It's really crappy that streaming still works in last.fm's client, but they prohibit Songbird from doing the same thing. Last.fm should improve their interface or let us use Songbird.
I’m mad
-
Inappropriate?it only dosnt work on songbird for me. probably last.fms fault somewhere not allowing it to access it
-
Inappropriate? The title pretty much says it all. Never worked.
I'm using the old "audioscrobbler-0.4.1.1146.xpi" because the newer ones require me to subscribe the last.fm service although i'm living in germany where last.fm is totally free! (not using any proxies here!)
Looking forward for your help, cheers!

I’m quite mindfucked

Inappropriate? This is a pile of crap. I can listen to last.fm using rthymbox music player in linux but not in songbird? Is rthymbox doing something illegal or are they paying last.fm for access?
I’m confused
