Introductory video on the Songbird frontpage?
I think I personally have brought this up a few times. Any reason why an introductory video hasn't been released yet? It might only take 3 or 4 hours to make a 15 minute one, could be hosted over youtube (so cost little in terms of bandwidth), and showcase features which users may have not yet seen.
Whilst working at an Apple reseller, I saw at least one instance of someone cutting together a professional training video within a few hours in final cut pro (and this would probably be easier, because a lot of it would be screen recording, so the presenters lips don't need to be synchronised with the audio even for most the time).
Otherwise, why not encourage users to make their own showcase video's, and reward the best video with a prize (a free trip to Fiji would definitely attract a lot of attention, but I'm guessing less would have to be settled for) :P

I really love the contest idea and it sounds the most attainable right now. I had been formulating a different contest idea in my head already so I even have prize ideas aside from the same old bird tee...

Inappropriate?I like these last two ideas you've made about getting more videos up on the site; I think video makes it a lot easier for process new information than just reading a bunch of text. They could just make a main introductory video, or maybe one with each release to let people know about the new features. I bet a lot of people didn't even realize an equalizer was added with Isan if they didn't read the blog post because there is nothing on the main page showing off new changes.
Miro's homepage has a great example of an introductory video.

ya I agree there needs to be a "what's new" page/video opened whenever Songbird gets updated like the screencast for 1.0... -
Inappropriate?I'm sure that translators would be happy to copy the same scenario and create a video in their language as well.

Inappropriate?Psyching out the competition already eh? I did that when I won a competition at Astalavista for an iPod (I gave them the impression that dozens of people were probably entering. Its easy to win when only 4 people enter the competition.)

Because if you don't, there simply isn't enough time to make the video :(
Simply doing stuff like being able to get permission to use some music for the background will take effort :(

Inappropriate?Well, even at a time past when the expected first beta of the new Songbird is expected.. Because at the moment, we'd have to make a video that shows 1.2 features. Kill 2 birds with 1 stone, and we have a front page video for 1.4 on launch day ;)
If the time is extendedd, you give even those who have no experience with video editing time to produce an Oscar winning piece ;) And, it can be for a new product, not a product that was released months ago..

I went back to look at the calender and I was like, okay how much more time would they need...then I headed to the company announcement and saw I typed Sept. 30, not OCT. 30 which is what we'd planned all along, hence the Nov. 5th winner announcement. So, I fixed that. I assume that will work for you guys, if not let me know. And it was wrong (but is now updated) everywhere because I copy and pasted the message, um, everywhere.
