Inappropriate? It would be useful to everyone if you gave us a little more information.
iPod generation (e.g. iPod nano 2nd generation), operating system (e.g. windows vista, ubuntu) and the version of songbird you are using would be useful.
However have you checked the following:
1. Check that your iPod is supported by the "iPod Device support" add-on
You can find a list of supported iPod models here:
http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/index.ph...
The iPhone and iPod touch are NOT supported but the rest should be okay.
2. Make sure you have the iPod add-on installed.
To check click on "Tools -> Add-ons". If iPod Device Support isn't listed then you need to add it.
You can add it by going to "Tools -> Add-ons" and then clicking on "Get Extensions". A new tab will open in songbird, click on "Playback & Management" then click the install button next to "iPod Device Support"
3. Make sure that another program isn't trying to use your iPod (like iTunes)
Hope this helps in some way.

Its Ipod Classic 6th Gen. and it used to work just fine with songbird but now randomly it does not so i don't know whats up. i have the Add-on and i don't even have Itunes on my comp -
..buy good ipod touch see here http://www.superbipod.com -
Inappropriate? What operating system are you running GNU/Linux [specify distro], Mac OSX [give version] or Windows [give version] ?
Without knowing what operating system you use I can't suggest much. Perhaps the add-on is broken somehow. Try uninstalling the "iPod Device support" add-on restart songbird, re-install the add-on and restart and see what happens.
Check to see if another applications can see your device. In windows (if you have disk use enabled) it should appear as a disk drive in "My Computer" and in linux it should appear as a disk drive (sorry I don't know about Mac OSX).
If other applications can't see it then it is likely something is wrong with your system setup or iPod.
Also check that your iPod hasn't frozen when you plug it into your computer (mine used to do that - so damn annoying). Disconnect from your pc and hold the central button and menu on the iPod to reset it.
Other than that I can't suggest much else sorry. -
i have windows Vista. i tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drive. it does not freeze. My device is being read by the computer coming up as a drive. -
Inappropriate?I have a 1st gen ipod shuffle, a 4th gen ipod classic and a 6th gen ipod classic and i'm working with ubuntu 8.04, and no one is working with songbird.
They are recognized by the OS, i can play songs and even syncronize them with Rhythmbox 0.11.5. The version of songbird is: 1.0.0, Build 860.
TIA

iI had the same probleme with Ubuntu. Try using your iPod via Firewire if possible. In my case that helped. -
Inappropriate? My mistake, is an 5th gen ipod classic 160GB.
-
Inappropriate?I am also having the same problem. I have an ipod class 6th gen. I have windows on my computer and my ipod is recognized on the computer, just not songbird. I uninstalled and reinstalled the ipod device support add-on and don't know what else to do
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem with a 2nd gen iPod shuffle on Windows XP.
I've unchecked the "launch iTunes when iPod is plugged in thing" also check the "enable disk usage". Then I uninstalled iTunes.
Song bird doesn't recognize that my iPod is there, also my ipod shows up on the computer as a disk drive -
Inappropriate?I have a 2nd gen shuffle with windows xp. Whats the trick to get this to work? I plug in the ipod and nothing happens :(
-
Inappropriate?I have an Ipod shuffle 1G using Windows 2000. It worked before the upgrade to the latest IPOD extension.
I can see the drive mounted on Windows explorer.
I uninstalled Songbird, cleaned the registry of any mentions, deleted all realated files and even tried to install one of the older builds but with no success so far.
Is there any debug/dump information I can gather to help solve this....
I don't want to have to load iTunes on this old PC....it would crawl even worse than it is now :(
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I'm using iPod Mini 6Gb with GNU/Ubuntu Linux and SongBird 1.1.2.
My ipod it's not recognized by Songbird, but it is by the system and rythmbox.
What should I do? After songbird I lost my interest in other players, but certainly, not in my ipod.
I’m frustrated and anxious

Inappropriate? It occured to me today that there is something Ubuntu users could try. I don't guarantee this will do anything seeing as I don't know how the iPod plugin detects the presence of an iPod.
My idea is to mount the iPod in a different place manually (I tried it on mine and it works fine).
Here are the steps
1. Plug in iPod, check you can see the device in Places > Computer > [NAME of DEVICE] and that you can browse it.
2. Start songbird with the iPod plug in installed and see if it detects it.
3. If not let's try mounting the iPod somewhere else and seeing if songbird can see it. So exit songbird.
4. Go into the /media/ directory and find out which folder contains your ipod stuff (mines called disk most of the time). You should see the same folder contents that you did when you browsed your iPod in step 1. .Make a note of this folder name.
5. Now go into the Terminal/command line and type.
mount
6. This will list all the filesystems currently mounted look for a line containing /media/[NAME_OF_YOUR_IPOD_FOLDER]
Mine looks like this...
/dev/sdc2 on /media/disk type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,shortname=mixed,uid=1000,utf8,umask=077,flush)
Make a note of the bit at the beginning of the line, this is the device location (on mine it's /dev/sdc2)
7. Now we will unmount the device. In the terminal type
sudo umount /dev/[DEVICE_NAME]
So in my case I would type sudo umount /dev/sdc2
8. Okay hopefully that worked. Now let's mount the device in a new location. I'm going to choose /mnt , but you could choose any other existing empty folder.
sudo mount /dev/[DEVICE_NAME] /mnt
So in my case I would type mount /dev/sdc2 /mnt
9. Hopefully that worked, you can see it listed when you type
mount
In the command line. You can also browse into the /mnt folder to also verify this has worked.
10. Now start songbird and see if this has worked.
I have my doubts that this will fix peoples problems but it's always worth a shot. In any case this'll teach you the very basics mounting in linux anyway.

Inappropriate?@dan: I did that earlier and there seems to be no effect on the ipod detection. In fact, regarding my iPod problem, if conected via firewire or usb Ubuntu always mounts my iPod into the same directory /media/IPOD, but via Firewire it works, via USB it doesn't, so I doubt that Songbird looks for a specific mount point, but thx anyway.

Inappropriate? If you guys have this iPod: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353#do... running under Linux, please note that it will only work if connected to a Firewire Port! At the moment it is NOT detected if connected to a USB port.
In the iPod Device Support wiki (http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Docs/Dev...), this iPod is listed as not working under Linux, but I've tested it on various PCs and it works. On windows PCs it works also via USB port.

Inappropriate? In the Songbird Add-On page i have found a Ipod Add-on. I installed it using songbird itself. And now everything works! Search in add-ons on songbird's website.

Inappropriate?Oops... just noticed that this slipped by us...
To help Songbird recognize the iPod, Delete the iPod_Control folder on the iPod
(How to: Windows, Mac)
Note: This will erase all the data/music on your iPod.
I’m confident

I tried the above (& a bunch of other stuff) and still no dice. I'm running Fedora 8 and using a 5th gen 30g. The iPod shows up on the Desktop and I've had mixed results with gtkpod - so I'm eager to try Songbird. ...But gtkpod can see the iPod and load songs on it - usually.
Thanks for the help. -
Inappropriate?Running snow leopard, got songbird and the ipod plugin. deleted the control folder but songbird still can't recognize my ipod. got a gen 1 nano.
What do i do? :/ -
Inappropriate?30GB ipod 5g/Snow Leopard here. My ipod used to be recognized but no more. Deleting iPod_Control and restoring the ipod do not fix it. I have to use iTunes, which makes me sad.

Inappropriate?G'day, iPod touch's aren't supported at this time because the only way to add support for iPod touch's, is by cracking the encryption and breaking DMCA laws. Its not really POTI's fault. Apple could also demand POTI remove the support at any time. You only need to look as far as the cat and mouse game Apple and Palm are playing to see the risks.
Furthermore, the time spent reverse engineering the iPod touch's could be spent adding quite a few new features, and would continue to consume a lot of POTI's time (every major iPod touch version update, would once again require reverse engineering). That's why POTI now recommend a two way sync with iTunes for iPod's, because its the only way they can quickly, and easily provide a good experience.
Instead of pouring resources into supporting a product whose manufacturer does not want to be supported, POTI could spend the same amount of resources into supporting dozens of other players, and new features. Long term, it makes significantly more sense to support a dozen different players instead. Development does cost money though (developers do get paid), and pouring tens of thousands of dollars into supporting a device that will only work half the time, would be suicide!
POTI have also open sourced the iPod plugin, so it isn't out of the question for the community to add support to it. Plenty of us don't have ipod touches though (I owned one for a month, then sold it), so I don't think it makes sense, especially since POTI couldn't support the itunes music store..

Inappropriate? Before installing OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard I didn't have any problems what so ever mounting my ipods on Songbird, but now I've tried all the tricks I've found and just can't get anything to mount anymore.
I have a 1st g Nano, 2nd g Shuffle and a 5th g 30G Classic. None of them are mounting with Snow Leopard which makes me really sad. I've tried to run different versions of Songbird, now running the 1.4.0b3, Build 1303 with the latest iPod Device Support 3.0.15.1322 without any results.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Same here, after installing Snow Leopard my iPod Classic 6th gen. doesn't show up. Tried reinstalling the add-on, reinstalling Songbird etc.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Ok.. From the sounds of things, it must have broken around 1.4b3 :(
For everyone.. Anyone have any working ipods since upgrading to that, on any OS? -
Inappropriate?got the same problem here after installing snow leopard on my mbp. songbird (version 1.2.0, build 1146; ipod device support version: 3.0.13.1146) wont' get access to my nano (4th gen., latest firmware). i've also tried the newest beta (1.4.0b3 build 1303) with the ipod device support-plugin compatible to it. it still doesn't work. what could be the problem? ist it just about the plugin?
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?I had the same problem with ubuntu 9.10. Then, I downgraded to 9.04. I assume that you downloaded the 9.04 package from getdeb. IT IS REALLY NOT COMPATIBLE WITH 9.10
-
Inappropriate?did anyone of you try to instll an older version on snow leopard with any results? i just cant't find an older version, if i could, i would try it on my own
-
Inappropriate?seems like noone has an idea of getting this worked...i really like songbird, used it before switching to mac on my ubuntu-desktop, mainly for listening to radio-stations and synchronizig my ipod, but now there seems to be no other way than using crappy itunes. can it just be about the plugin?
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? It stopped working since the upgrade to ubuntu 9.10
in 9.04 it did work... :(
I’m sad

pls try to unmount and remount your ipod in karmic. this should work for you. I had the same problem. It has to do with Karmic mounting the ipod readonly with no write-access. -
And how am I supposed to do that?
I mean, from terminal or jus by unplugging it from the usb device
(if terminal, how to do it?) -
If you plug in your ipod you see the ipod on your desktop, right? So just right click on your ipod and select unmount (hope it's named like this, as I'm using the german version) Don't select eject!. Then go to Places and your iPod should be in the list - just click on it to remount it. That's it. -
Woohoow that indeed solved it!
Thanks a lot :D -
np ;) -
the unmount, remount trick is what worked for me too!! Thank you!
(1st gen nano, ubuntu 9.10) -
Inappropriate?Have a read of
http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/ipod_not_connecting_on_ubuntu_karmic_9_10
Essentially you need to find out where you ipod is mounted (from the terminal run "mount" - this will list all mounted devices).
Then you unmount it (from the terminal run "sudo umount /dev/sdXX" where sdXX is your ipod).
Then you remount it somewhere sensible like /mnt/ipod (you need to make the mount point/directory first e.g. run from terminal "sudo mkdir /mnt/ipod")
To remount:
sudo mount -t vfat -o uid=1000,gid=1000 /dev/sdXX /mnt/ipod
Where uid and gid are you user id and group id respectively (run the command "id" to find out what you ids are).
Hope this helps. -
Inappropriate? It says "The company marked this question as answered." Did I miss anything? Did anyone get iPod support working with Snow Leopard?
-
Inappropriate?i just bought the 160g classic, as soon as it connected a window poped up saying to select a app to use on ipod. there was nothing that i could select so i just clicked cancel. then i went to places/computer/ipod then format it. after that i opened up songbird it still didnt see my ipod, so then with songbird still open i went back to places/computer and unmounted the ipod after it did that it remounted it automatically and it poped up on my songbird list. I use ubuntu 9.10, songbird, and the ipod device support add on.
