iPod syncing distorts audio files

I know that Songbird probably isn't supposed to be an iTunes replacement at this stage, but the only factor that's stopping me from ditching it completely is the following issue;

When using Songbird to sync music, the audio files themselves seem to degrade in quality when listening to them via the iPod. It makes mp3's sound distorted, even if the original files are of a high bitrate. I use my iPod mainly through the dock in my car, and at loud volume, it is really noticable, its also the same if I listen via my headphones.

I would guess this is because Songbird tries to normalise volumes, and if gain is added (or maybe if taken away) then the sound becomes distorted.

Having said that, by no stretch of the imagination can I claim to be an expert in anything of this nature, so my assumption probably isn't 100% accurate...

I really would love an answer to this even if it was to be told i am completely wrong in everything I've said!

I'm using Songbird 1.1 on Windows 7 Beta (maybe that's the issue?)
