is there a portable version of songbird?
is there a portable version of songbird?
I keep all of my music and podcasts on a portable drive. It would be nice if I could keep songbird on the same drive and play it on whatever machine I was connected to.

Inappropriate?noname, There currently is not a portable version of Songbird that could work like this. As far as I know U3's technology, after being acquired by Sandisk, hasn't really had much adoption. Meanwhile, unless Mozilla were to decide to make xulrunner portable, this wouldn't be something we could support.

Inappropriate?I also have all my music on a portable hard drive and haven't been happy with any other way to organize and play my library.
I have been using the portable version from PortableApps.com for a little bit and it has worked pretty well so far.
Hopefully (and i expect it will), interest continues to drive both projects forward!
I’m encouraged

It can run portably, but when you download a music or add music files to your library you can't remove them later, also if the full path to %profile%\db changes (ie: D:\PortableSongbird\Data\Profile\db on one computer and E:\PortableSongbird\Data\Profile\db on another where the usb stick uses another drive letter) songbird will not look for the databases in the new path, but it will look in the old, wich doesn't exist. So it will run portably, but the library will disappear. -
Oh, yeah.
I've got VLC portable for quick listens but if i want an extended play i will use Songbird. To set up Songbird on a new computer, I just have it re-scan my library. It takes a little time but is well worth it.
I don't use playlists and assume they won't carry over well... -
Inappropriate? You could make portable version by following these steps:
1. Install the latest Songbird on your computer
2. go to "program files" and copy the folder "Songbird" to your desktop
3. UN-install songbird
4. now you can use song bird without it being installed, by opening the folder you copied to the desktop and opening the songbird.exe. (don't delete or move anything within the folder, always move the whole folder with everything still in it).
I've done it so it definitely works.
I’m confident

You're missing a few things. You don't want to leave traces of Songbird on computers you've used the portable version on so you'll need to remove the registry entries it creates and remove the Application Data folder under user settings.
To track what registry entries it adds you can use regshot, there's probably another app to track what other folder dependencies it creates. I've used one to do a full system snapshot to see watch for folder/file modifications but I can't remember what it's called.
If you're only using this on your own private PCs, you don't have to worry about it. If not, you might want to wait for the PortableApps Version. -
Inappropriate?RE: the changing driver letters across different computers, can you specify drive name instead of letter, ie "Ricardosthumdrive" ?

Inappropriate? All I really want is a way to keep my database on the portable drive. I move it back and forth from home to work, and want to keep changes made in each place. Simply being able to tell Songbird where to keep it's database would do the job, since I can easily force the drive mapping.
