iTunes imports but won't play & where's the meta data gone?
1. I travel a lot so I need my iTunes to be mobile. Songbird is on my desktop, my iTunes library is on the external hard drive of my laptop. I installed Songbird and then imported my iTunes library (I pointed to the xml file in Laptop:\MyName\Music\iTunes. Ok, library imported with tags, algum names, artist names and all. However, Songbird won't play the files.
2. To further test, I then imported the files through File/Scan for Media pointing it to the laptop external hard drive, and it imported the songs and plays them fine. However, all the files are imported using only the file name. No album, artist or other tag info. What's up with that? I tag all my music and download artwork, none of that turned up....
First question then is - I want to import from iTunes using the xml file on the laptop and play the files off the laptop external hard drive, all from my PC. Can that be done?
Second question is - if I can't use my iTunes xml file to import, is there any way I can get Songbird to import the files directly from the external hard drive while preserving the meta data for the files?.

Inappropriate? What platform are you running on your desktop and your laptop?
How the external drive is mounted in the OS on your laptop?
Is your laptop with external drive is always on and connected(wired or via bluetooth) when you're attempting to play those files from your desktop?
In other words, can you navigate to that external drive from your desktop during the playback?
Do you get any messages, something like.."Source is not found..." when you're trying to play tracks in Songbird on a desktop?
Why want you connect your external drive with the media directly to your desktop when you're home?
