Latest Songbird ATE most of my Mp3's
when I installed the latest updated version, 0.6.1, and associated it with my music directory, it DELETED almost 500 mp3,s which I had to recover with un-delete software! I'd like to know WHY it did this and how to prevent this in the future or I will not feel safe using songbird.
Attached is an image from the recovery software listing the titles that were deleted.

Inappropriate?Where were the files stored, that got deleted?
Hard-drive? IPod? Other media? -
Inappropriate? It was on a Hard drive on a Windows Xp system.
-amd 64 x2 TL-50
-2 gigs ram
-seagate 160 gb hd
They have since been recovered, but I would still like to know how & why the program did this in the first place.
The strange thing is that they just dissappeared, they were NOT deleted to the trash or moved to a different location. The music folder just went from having close to 4 gigs of music to having 500mb.
Recovery was easy with undelete software, but if this happend to someone who was unaware of such software, they would be out of luck.
Thanks in advance -
Inappropriate? This is very strange because we don't do deletion of any tracks off the user's hard drive (we're not supposed to anyway). The image you posted is too small to read so I have a couple of questions:
1) were all the tracks removed in the My Music folder (or subfolders of)?
2) it sounds like some of the tracks in that folder weren't deleted, is that right?
3) In any particular folder were some tracks deleted and others not?
4) Did you update from a previous version of Songbird or do a clean install of 0.6.1?
4.a) Were you using a profile from a previous installation?
5) Did you have any devices plugged in?
6) Can you provide any more detail about what you did during installation/upgrade? For instance, were you prompted to scan again, did you say yes, did you see a dialog about having an outdated profile and creation of a new one, did you do anything after launching before noticing the missing tracks?
7) Did you have any add-ons installed? If so, please list them and their versions.
8) And just to be super clear, you are indicating that the actual files on your harddrive were removed and you could navigate through Windows Explorer and see that they were missing, not that they were just absent from your Songbird Library.
Thanks in advance for any additional info you can provide. -
Inappropriate?Hi,
1) All of the tracks were not removed, but most of them were. This was not from "My Music", but from where I keep my music, a folder called "albums"
2) most were deleted, but some, perhaps 2 dozen files in 4 or 5 folders, were not.
3) No, I belive that it either deleted a folder and all it's contents, or left it alone.
4) I tried to update from a previous version, but it would not let me, it said the folder i had selected already contained files (the programs folder that is). So, I uninstalled the previous version and then started the install of v0.6.1
4a) I don't belive I was using a previous profile as I had uninstalled the previous version, but I suppose it's possible.
5) I do have a USB mouse plugged in, but thats it.
6) the installation went seemingly normal. I was pormpted to point songbird to my "itunes" directory. I dont have one, so I pressed cancel. I was then prompted to point songbird to a directory containing music files, so I selected the folder that resulted in the problem. It seemed to scan it for a minute or so, but then nothing popped up in the "my library" part of songbird. Curious about this, I then pointed explorer to said directory and discovered it was missing the bulk of it's previous contents.
7) I did have some add ins on the old version ,adblock, some feathers, maybe some others, but had not installed any in this new one yet.
8) to be super clear, the files were missing from my computer. They were not visable in explorer. they were not in the trash. they were not visible in songbird. I could navigate to the directory where they were and see a few files and a big hole where the rest were supposed to be. Viewing the folders propeties revealed a size of about 500 and some megs, when previously it must have contained close to 4 gigs.
The Mp3's were recoverable by using "Recuva" undelete software. I set it to search for recoverable files in the "albums" directory and it found most of them as missing, but recoverable files, not yet overwritten. I will attach a link to a (hopefully) better resolution image that shows a list of the files, their previous directory, thier "recoverable" state, and if any part of the file has yet been overwritten. If you scroll about halfway down, you will see some unrecoverable files that have begun to be overwritten with other data.
Hope this helps,
Thanks for you help & prompt reply!
