Let us manually specify the location to the iPhone Media folder PLEASE !
Why can you not specify the location to an iPod/iPhone's media folder directly instead of relying on this USB rubbish. Forget libgpod for iPhone support, just let us mount the iPhone via podfs, disk for ipod, or sshfs (or any one of a number of other solutions) and let us specify the directory where the media library is. Is that so hard ? Amarok can do it, so why can't Songbird ? It would be the simplest fix in the world to make.
Also I am disgusted that you have dropped PPC claiming that it's a minority OS now. There are probably 300% more PPC users than intel ones, and PPC machines have a long lifespan. My quad G5 is going to be more than adequate for my high end applications for the next 5 years at least, which is more than I can say for the average windows machine, so why are you so insistent in dropping support for a market that comprises the vast majority of Mac users. Hell, if you have to choose an architecture... choose PPC, at least Intel users can use PPC apps via Rosetta. PPC users do not have that luxury. No offense but it seems like laziness on the part of the developers. Apples documentation on creating universal binaries is very adequate. It's virtually no more effort to compile for PPC, and the excuse that PPC is a minority is absolute rubbish. At home I have machines as low speced as an 800mhz iMac that is perfectly usable today. My graphic designer works on a 1ghz Cube and loves it. Mac platforms have a long lifespan and as such deserve to be treated that way by developers. Hell, I actually still have some 68k machines that I use to listen to shoutcast streams. Newer is not better, and considering the ease with which some third parties have compiled Songbird 7 on PPC, I do not see why you cannot do it yourself, as while the program compiles and runs great... none of the plugins for Songbird 7 work on a self-compiled version because of the stupid version checks. What's the deal with that ? .xpi's are cross platform packages right ? So why do a version check that specifically excludes non-official builds. Very unfair.
Please add direct filesystem access to the iPhone Media library so that we can choose our OWN method of connection, and please consider taking a tiny bit extra time to maintain a PPC version of Songbird 7. Don't you realise the frustration I have to endure to use iTunes on a Quad 2.5ghz G5 ? Just because it's PPC doesn't mean I should have to put up with iTunes and nothing but iTunes. Throw us a bone here. Songbird rocks and I want to use it and I would GLADLY pay/donate for it. Even if you made the PPC version available via a $10 donation scheme to cover your extra development costs, I guarantee you that millions of PPC users would flock to your product instead of using crappy iTunes.
Would definitely appreciate a personal reply if you have the time. pawz@teamroot.net
Sincerely,
David

Inappropriate? Thanks for your feedback. We've considered this too!
We've got an open bug to support jailbroken iPhone/iPod touch's. Feel free to watch its progress or comment on it. Your comment has definitely re-opened the debate to prioritize this work so your voice is being heard! Unfortunately, I don't have an update but if you watch the bug you'll get the latest status on it.
With regards to PPC support the train has left the building on that one. We respect your disappointment. It was a difficult decision for us to make but it's not something we're considering revisiting at this time. While I understand that it's not the same as official support the good news is that there is now a community PPC build. There are a number of threads on why we dropped PPC support here on GS - if you don't feel like they address your concerns please feel free to contact me here or via email: support [a t] songbirdnest [dot] com
Appreciate you reaching out to us. Hope it's ok we responded here vs email!
