Linux version of Songbird and iTunes .xml importing
I don't quite understand how the Linux version of Songbird can import an iTunes .xml file. From what I understand, the .xml file not only has all the DRM keys for your protected music, but also tells iTunes where the music is. Correct me if I'm wrong there :P Will the iTunes library importer work on Linux and allow you to play .m4p files that you purchased?

Inappropriate? On the surface, importing an iTunes library does not makes sense on Linux, as you have pointed out. However, there are two side comments I would like to make:
1. iTunes libraries do not explicitly imply DRM music, since you can buy non-DRM music on iTunes or import mp3s DRM or otherwise into iTunes.
2. If an iTunes library points to a share folder (ie. USB, Network, etc), the URLs will point to the files properly. Thus, making it platform independent.
So while it does not make sense on the surface, there are scenarios where it could conceivably work.
That said, there is no harm with including this functionality, even if it is never used. If we disable it on Linux, there is going to be some user out there that complains about not being able to import the library.
The solution we have implemented makes the most sense for everyone.
Thank you for your feedback. -
Inappropriate?the iTunes Importer doesn't work with Linux.
Now the importer is the part of the core on other platforms, but it's not for Linux.
If you go to Tools-Options, there is no iTunes Importer pref, like in Windows or Mac. -
Inappropriate?PS.
Most applications have features that I never use. Does that mean they shouldn't have these features? I think not. -
Inappropriate?I have no problem having the feature available in Linux, that's actually what I'd prefer.
I was just wondering if it were possible to use the iTunes Library Importer in Linux and allow Songbird to play .m4p files. -
Inappropriate? And we still have a new bug open for this issue:
