Monitor folders and auto-update library
Is it possible (either natively or through an extension) to automatically update the library by monitoring folders? This is one of my biggest complains with iTunes, something that Windows Media Player does very well.

Inappropriate?I also want this. I just deleted a ton of music off my external harddrive, and Songbird still thinks they're there. It would be nice with some function to automatically clean up deleted files, like Winamp has.

If you install The Exorcist, a media view whose purpose is to clean up duplicate and missing (ghost) tracks from your library. -
Inappropriate? This is a feature that we were wanting to get into the next release but just couldn't sneak it in. We just have so many other things on our plate. However, it is definitely a feature we want to implement in the future.

*which* next version? I don't see this in 0.7rc3... so should I assume 0.8? -
Thank you! -
Awesome! I add music to my library so often I really NEED a watch folder feature! -
Inappropriate?yeah, noticing when files are removed is really important.. and probably easier than checking to see if new files were added.
I’m indifferent

Inappropriate? There needs to be a REFRESH library option. I have suggested (in a reply to another post) about even having a "Library -> Refresh selected files..." option, too. That way, if you know for sure which songs were changed/deleted, you don't have to refresh the entire database. Or have the whole thing refresh... give both options.
I ran into needing this when using an external app to modify ID3 tags (mp3 Tag&Rename). I just deleted the edited items from the library, and dropped the folder into songbird. Wasn't anything difficult, obviously, but something should be built-in.
Glad to see something is coming down the pike.
Currently on 0.7rc3...
I’m waiting for better synching or updating of the library

"Rescan Library" was actually a feature we were planning for 0.7 but had to be punted to a future release for various reasons that I won't go into. It is something we want too. -
I would also love/want that! -
Inappropriate?fyi, i literally have to go back to foobar because this isnt integrated. here's hopin the next release comes soon.
I’m sniffling
-
Inappropriate?@leoeris, sorry to hear that, but glad to hear you are willing to check us out in the next release. See you then!

Inappropriate?I love the idea behind songbird. The look and feel is great! But I just cannot use a media player that doesn't monitor my music library. I have so much music and I'm constantly adding new songs to my library, so I have to stick with my current player. Its really a shame too.

Inappropriate?Anyone following this thread:
If you want to follow what we are working on for this feature, please search for "[watchfolders]" at bugzilla.songbirdnest.com -
Inappropriate?Another problem with this (which will be absolete if the feature is implemented) is that SB just stops playing anything when it tries to play a file that is gone. Would be cool if it just would skip (and mark) it like iTunes does.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?also looking for the active-monitoring feature. will keep checking back. uninstalled winamp and itunes and now use songbird exclusively!
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?I'm still missing quite a few options that keep me from switching to Songbird, but a watch folder, re-scan folder button or 'remove dead files' button is a real big thing indeed. I hope it will be there soon ! Great work so far.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?until then the exorcist plugin helps at least to remove ghost files from your library!
http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/216
also power users can also set a "rescan library" in the console,
also look here

I’m in bad need of sleep.

qways (or another kind soul) can you describe how to do the Rescan Library through the console?
At everyone: Note that Watch Folders addresses a basic part of this, is supposed to see new files that get added.
