Most eagerly awaited features
These are my "Most eagerly awaited features", all of them listed under upcoming features in the Roadmap
CD Ripping/burning.
Probably the single most wanted feature is for Songbird to be able to manage CD’s. Although this kickass media player have the chance to present a larger variety of options where it really matters; What about the ability to rip a CD directly to your iPod/MTP device without adding any tracks to your computers hard drive and counter wise?
BitTorrent Support.
This would be a great complement to present music searchengines like SeeqPod. Offering an easy maneuverable view over your music, and the music you’re about to receive. Of course, this is also a matter of right or wrong when downloading files, music movies etc, but on the other hand, no one will ever force you to download anything if you don’t want to, and not all material is illegal to fetch. I guess this is a personal choice, although I’ve made mine.
Support visualizations.
I know this isn’t important in any way, but still. Imagine what could happen if it was built so regular users could create their own visualizations? Who knows what psychedelic results we would end up with?
Concert calendar/Ticket purchasing integration.
Exactly how awesome wouldn’t this be? No need to chasing through the net to find date/time/location/price anymore, because Songbird would do it automatically!
Efficiency is the key!
10-foot feather so Songbird can be used on a TV, etc.
This would so make my day! The thought of Songbird in high definition just makes me shiver.
Winamp skin to Songbird feather converter.
This one is interesting. Since I’ve very limited knowledge about Winmap skinning, it’ll be exciting to see how it’s going to be done. And obviously, if this opens any new possibilities in feathering.

Inappropriate?New Album alert! Every first time you listen to a band that has a new album out, you get an alert at the right bottom of your screen. I barely missed so many good albums just by not following all my favourite musicians personal lives/ growing discographies
compatibility with itunes cover art! Just to cmplete the list
I’m part of the process somehow
-
Inappropriate?Yeah! that's a good Idea. And perhaps not only the new albums, rather than a complete list of released albums (and as a even more usable feature, the ability to download the missing albums/tracks) ?
It's hard to cover the whole wishlist in just one post ;)
I’m excited
-
I would love to see a DISCOGRAPHY of the currently-playing artist(s)... that would make a great add-on. I think the trouble might be reliably finding a good source of information on the net. -
Inappropriate?@Lenny
This list looks great.
That would be so awesome to implement all of these features in Songbird!
One thing is already working though...
Concert calendar/Ticket purchasing integration is available with Concerts 0.0.6 add-on in Songbird 0.7.0rc version.
Have you tried that? -
Yes, but since I live in Sweden it would be nice to be able to search for concerts in Europe, not only US and UK.... But apart from that it works really well. Btw, 0.7.0rc is looking really good compared to previous nightly builds! -
Inappropriate?I like the BitTorrent support idea, I've never really thought about it but it sure would make a lot of people's lives a lot easier.
The Winamp -> Songbird converter idea is probably not realistic, because the two applications have very different interfaces.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate? But if concert alert works, Album alert is just another function of the same script, isn't it?
-
Inappropriate?Nope - it requires a whole new data source... it wouldn't actually share anything in common with the Concert alert :) (or not very much)
-
Inappropriate?I guess there's no sense arguing... I'd just think that if this concert alert is some kind of "feed" given by the bands or some event management network, an album alert would be the same thing, only different "feed"is given by either the band or amazon or something.
I’m totally clueless, but I talk like I'm an expert
-
Inappropriate?Yup - if you know of such a feed, I'd be interested in incorporating it into mashTape.
-
Inappropriate?Again - I'm no expert, I'm just trying to analyze this with cold logic. Where do you get this concert feed from? And what format is it? I'd guess it was some kind of a ticket store, and something like RSS. Now there are a lot of RSS feeds that alert you if a new album comes up. Like review pages or something. (Maybe I should look that up before I take it for granted) From my totally unexperienced point of view, disregarding all technological barriers I'd say that something similar to the concert alert is possible.
I’m sure I don't make any sense at all
-
Inappropriate?I think the event feed comes form Last.fmand is RSS. I'll try to look for something similar for album releases but I'v never heard about it. As stevel said, the main difficulty is to find the seed.
By the way, it would be a terrific add-on!
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Well I found some interesting things.
Someone worked on something a bit similar : http://www.bernzilla.com/item.php?id=494
There's a topic about this on last.fm : http://www.last.fm/forum/21717/_/3664...
And something done by someone from this topic which sounds great (but I haven't tested it yet) : http://www.soundamus.net/
In anycase they're using amazon web service to browse album release list.
I hope this will be useful
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Sorry for the triple post but I digged further into this issue. I think the best solution is to use the Amazon Web Service search engine to search for cds of the "currently played artist", sort the results by release date and take only, for example, the five last and display them on songbird (it would greatly integrate to the mashup addon). As Amazon is referencing future release, you'll have them (and the latest already released too, in case you've missed something from you favourite artist).
It seems that it's how soundamus is doing. -
Inappropriate?Yeah - that sounds like a reasonable way to do it; not quite as simple and nice as a straight feed - since it requires some post-processing, but I'll think about how to incorporate that into my next mashTape release.
-
Inappropriate?Thank you! All of that in three days... If I asked itunes support that question, they might not have even answered me yet that they won't do it
-
Inappropriate?>>CD Ripping/burning: What about the ability to rip a CD directly to your iPod/MTP device without adding any tracks to your computers hard drive and counter wise?
Why? I want everything I rip to be in my library. Backup of music library? If something is only on a player, that's pretty risky.
>>BitTorrent Support.
I'd rather not re-invent the wheel here. Then again, I haven't really pirated tunes in ages...
>>Support visualizations.
Too much bloat. If I'm not using the computer while listening to music, I'd probably just turn the monitor off.
>>Concert calendar/Ticket purchasing integration.
Getting a reliable feed that services different countries/regions seems tricky. Might be more headache than it's worth.
>>Winamp skin to Songbird feather converter.
No way. They are too vastly different. Besides, build it and they will skin...
I’m happy to provide feedback!

Inappropriate?@myrkat:
CD Ripping/burning.
The transfer without adding to drive thing might, from my point of view, come in handy when you want to make a copy of a CD to another person that hasn't got the same taste in music as you. Or when you're somewhere you can't or don't have time to do the process in two steps, ( that take twice the time compared to my suggested
method. ) for example a you've got two of your friends over at your place, friend1 like friend2's music that is stored on his iPod/mp3. You simply plug both devices to your computer and Songbird could with ease transfer music between the friends. This would be faster, more stable & yet one more thing that would do the Songbird Media Player even more unique.
BitTorrent Support.
Why would this be a re-invention of the wheel? I'm well aware that there are a couple of decent, and a few very good programs that do this outside Songbird. But Imagine this, and the freedom it gives the user. From your post, I get the feeling that your not very eager about sharing music, movies etc. but remember that is a individual choice. No one will ever force you to download music, but if you do, remember that it isn't too late to pay for it even though you've already have obtained it.
Simply If you like it, you buy it.
Support visualizations.
Too much bloat you say? Well personally I'd like to have some kind of visualizations when I use my digital media at, for instance, a party or likewise. Try hook up a media player with visualizations to a projector, play some music and get the crowd's undivided attention. You'll see what I mean...
Concert calendar/Ticket purchasing integration.
If this is built as a reliable part of songbird, it will be priceless.
There's no, to my knowledge, media player that does this as good as it has to be if it should be functional yet. If you know any, please tell me so.
Winamp skin to Songbird feather converter.
Of course this is almost a utopia. Although, it is listed under Currently Unscheduled Feature Requests.
Not saying it will see daylight, but still.
I’m looking forward to hear some replies.
-
Inappropriate?I just thought about something I'd really like to see in Songbird is ( part of the bird itself, or as an add-on ) a way to stream music and movies to my ps3, since it's connected to my surround system. Also, this would naturally mean streaming from my central media device to all other devices on the network.
I know some of you guys talked about this way back, but I didn't hear anything more about it.....
I currently use TVersity to do this for me, and I know that songbird can do it just as good or better if it just wants to!
I’m streaming!
-
Inappropriate?@Lenny: I just want to say, that all your feature-suggestions are minor to me. I think other features are much more important. Like "Equalizer", "Podcast-support", "Better now playing list", "Handle usb-mass-devices".
Some of your suggestions are minor important like "CD-Ripping" or your "10 foot feathers."
All the other suggestions look VERY VERY minor to me. Of course it would be nice to have them, but perhaps in Songbird 3.0 or something.
I’m indifferent
-
yes you're right. of course these suggestions aren't all top priority yet. Iike to look at them as a way to see the potential in this project. I agree when you mention all those features that are more important, and perhaps equalizer is most important of them all. -
Same feeling here. Particularly an external storage support under linux. -
Inappropriate?Another Feature I would like to see is that, Instead of a video opening up in another window, why cant it just open up in a new tab
-
Inappropriate?Songbird is already my favorite desktop media player by far, but if/when BitTorrent support is added I'll be in media player heaven. Maybe you guys should look at libtorrent. It's portable and has pretty good performance. In fact, it is the engine of the client I run now.
I’m excited
-
-
Inappropriate?consolidation tool for the love of god!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ^__^
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate?i dont realy care about any of these.... only the CD ripping would be a nice adition AFTER media library management is working (useless any other way... will u make 2 different modules for naming the files? use the same rules!)
I’m frustrated
