multiple tagging system, usability and layout
I know this topic exists, but with the point on how tagging could/should be done.
From there I would draw the Conclusion: IT IS POSSIBLE, but some real programmer should decide where to write the data.
(to me it seems best to use an empty field in id3-tag system, at least for mp3's, and use comma separated labels, no data lost, other players can show the tag field, with all the comma separated labels in them as well, although they can't use them.)
So my point is how we, the users, would make use of it.
So here are three suggestions: maybe some others like it, maybe they can be improved and maybe they can be realised one or another way on one or another day.
To me it is absolutly certain that multiple tags will come to Media Players as well.
When I first used a Media Player (10 years ago) I was already complaining about this.
But when I look now at the whole web2.0 thing, those systems became so common.
Blogs, News, Videos, Online Streams, and Songs on Last.fm...
It is more than the time now to teach Media Players multiple tagging systems!
And Songbird I like most, so I hope our bird will win the race!!!
My suggestion:
### 1. short: ###
general point: beeing able to use those labels for filtering the song list or hopefully even in combination with the filter pane (so that one can make a pre-selection via labels and only selected labels are passed on to the filter pane where one has a nice overlook over albums/Artist etc. that fit the label selection. My library is not to big alltogether 32GB but still i find it hard to search trough it)
1.line with label fields and drop down menu to select
simply having a small line with one field (to start of) clicking on it one can choose labels via drop down menu, and then have the possibility to select another label as well (if there are songs with both labels)
2. big list
just a list with all labels, where one can select them maybe by checkboxes, in the very left panel (under Playlist)
and the ability of alphabetical scrolling. just mark a label (1 click) then hit a key (letter o) and the mark scrolls to the first label starting with "o" or something similar.
double clicking the label will activate the checkbox.
3. a "cloud of words" (or better a "swarm of birds")
a label cloud, but with two options and an input field:
option1: size by total number of label (so that labels given to most songs are biggest)
option2: size by label selection count (so that labels i selected most often are biggest)
input field: again alphabetical selection, input "a" shows only labels starting with "a" ... ... ...
selecting a label is simply done by clicking on it, then it's color is changing (or it "flows" to a line at the bottom or top, where all selected labels fly to, just clicking on them there makes them fly back into the cloud again)
and maybe again an option to show only unlabeled, only labeled, only selected labels.
and instead a cloud of Birds it would be cool to have a "swarm of Birds"
little songbird-logo-style birds with the label names on them.
selecting a label makes the bird fly to a tree and sit down on a branch. (and/or change its feathers)
looking quite happy.
clicking on it again (unselecting the label) makes the bird turn his head towards the user, making an angry face and fly away to the swarm again.
hehehe

Inappropriate?Swarm of Birds
here is a little pic to show
when to many labels are selected only the most importent ones could sit on the branch, and the others are shown in a list at the bottom...? or so...
I’m happy

Inappropriate? After Testing the functionality in foobar2000
(see http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t...)
I got a new Idea:
when selecting several lablels it is also possible to link them with an "OR" search Phrase: so all options above need a button to switch between
"AND" (all selected labels must be in the tag-field) and
"OR" (either of the selected labels must be in the tag-field)
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?too late, I can't edit any more...
just had another Idea for the "Swarm of Birds"
the Swarm of birds is ordered in an alphabetical way, and with the scroll wheel from mouse or with a scrollbar the fly by, from 123 over hij to xyz.
here a little pic:
first scrollbar very left, second scrollbar very right.
at the bottom: AND/OR switch and a list of selected labels
I’m happy

Inappropriate?I think it is a very creative idea. Even without the bird imagery, you bring up and important suggestion about tagging- that there could be a way to view the tags in a cloud rather than just benefiting from them in a search field. I don't know if giving music tags will be in Songbird by default since it is akin to ID tagging songs, but hopefully someone will edit the existing tag-cloud media view or create a new one that includes these "tags", rather than just ID tags like artist and album. If the tags happen to be represented by tweeting birds, maybe that would just add to the fun :).

Inappropriate?I like the idea of labels, even the flock of birds...
but my needs are simple: the labels could be like labels in your email inbox.
There may be other ways to achieve what I want but labels I can manage!
So for example, I have a collection of tracks, but for general playing I'd like to exclude Christmas songs. With a label, these could be deselected. Or some of the music I have is for teaching purposes and it's a real downer to have grade 3 songs pop up in the middle of a party! With a different label, these could be excluded.
But thanks to you people at Songbird for a great player!
Ian
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?@ian:
right, good idea.
so one could just select all labels (with OR connection) except the "christmas" one, but songs labeled with "christmas, classical" or similar would still be played as long as "classical" ist selected as well, so an "exclude" function would be useful...
thanks ian! didn't think about that... but that's what we are here for! ;-)
and to find someone who can program this...
@Murphy
I know THAT it can be done and have a rough idea of how the logic behind it should be, but I don't know the programming language and don't have the time learning it.
I tried it with foobar, as written above and explained here
http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t...
you can eather use a new metadata field or even use the "genre" field, just enter multiple things in there like: "rock, alternative, male singer" for example for some R.E.M. songs, or "worldmusic, cuban, son, male singer" in the genre field for compay segundo songs.
and with a search you can find all genres with rock,
or all genres with rock AND alternative,
or all songs with rock OR male singers in the genre (so R.E.M. and compay segundo would be played)
it works well, it is just an awful, time consuming work to write all that stuff in the foobar search field everytime...
@all
how about naming it not "tags" or "labels"?
why not find a new name for it, espacially songbird related.
for example call it "chirps" or something like that? ("tone of chirp"... any ideas???) -
Inappropriate? Its a brilliant idea. I mean if you have one song on multiple albums, or instance one song could be on an original album, a greatest hits, and a movie sound track. you shouldn't have to have three copies of the same song. But you should also be able to listen to it as a part of each album. It seems relatively simple in concept
