No sound in Songbird on Hardy Heron
I run Ubuntu Hardy Heron, I have all the gstreamer libs installed properly, Banshee for instance works without problem, Songbird does not, it refuses to play any song in any format.
When trying to execute: gst-launch-0.10 playbin with an mp3 file as the target, I get: A ID3 tag demuxer plugin is required to play this stream, but not installed.
However when I select a song in the library in Songbird, right click and choose Edit metadata it works ok.

Inappropriate?I saw a forum post about this that posted this resource as a place to find a fix.
Are you experiencing sounds problems with other applications? Or just Songbird? -
Inappropriate?Just Songbird, Banshee et al (totem, vlc, xmms etc) works just fine, heck I can even adjust a lot of settings with the GNOME ALSA Mixer which works just fine.
So I followed the instructions you linked to, to the smallest detail, trying with both an empty asound.conf file, and one with the stuff recommended for Gutsy, but to no avail, Songbird still refuses to play my music.
Let me describe the behavior in more detail: When a song is double clicked Songbird will try and play it for like 10s or something, after that it will jump to the next file in the library and try that one for 10s and so on, there are no error messages or anything.
Is there some debug addon available maybe where one can see errors and warnings that I could try? -
Inappropriate? That error message sounds like you don't have gst-plugins-good installed - you'll need that. And then you'll need to install an mp3 decoder.
If that's still not working, then you should run "gstreamer-properties" and make sure the audio output is set to "autodetect". -
Inappropriate?I had this problem. I followed Mike Smith's instruction and installed gst-plugins-good and in my "gstreamer-properties" audio output was set to autodetect but Songbird still couldn't play mp3 files. So I changed audio output to ALSA and it solved this problem.

Inappropriate?This is a known issue.
PulseAudio is the standard sound server in Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04.
Songbird is an application using ALSA.
Changing audio output to ALSA solves the problem. -
Inappropriate?Changing output to ALSA _shouldn't_ be the answer here. It will break output on a normal/working Ubuntu 8.04 system. 'Autodetect' should be selecting pulsesink, which is the correct sink to use on this system.
I don't think this is a known issue, Boris - can you point me at a bug number? -
Inappropriate?Mike,
there are some bugs related to that:

According to the last comment from Hanniph, switching to ALSA resolved the problem.
I might not be the best in giving the solutions regarding the GStreamer issues to our users.
Do you mind if we forward all those questions to you? -
Inappropriate?Sure, forward things like this to me.
On a default, normal, working ubuntu 8.04 install, switching to alsa will actually break things. Pulseaudio doesn't seem to work right for everyone, so switching to alsa might be a good backup solution - but it's certainly not the right approach in general (changing this to alsa breaks playback entirely on my machine, for instance!) -
Inappropriate? Thanks for all the help but I think I will give up now, something is strange with my system which seems to be Gstreamer related, I'll describe anyway in case you find it interesting:
Running "gstreamer-properties" gives me a long list of "Skipping unavailable plugin 'autoaudiosink'/'alsasink' etc. In the window I have no other option than Plugin: "Custom" under Default Output, Device is simply grayed out with "None".
However Synaptic is telling me I have every gstreamer plugin installed that is available on this planet, good, bad and ugly. All other applications work without any problems, VLC, Totem, Banshee and so on, only Songbird fails. Heck I can even use the GNOME ALSA Mixer to change volume levels on a number of different channels, everything works like a charm.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?Definitivamente SONGBIRD no es una buena alternativa para ShoutCast ni mucho menos como reproductor.
Demasiado deficiente continuaré usando AMAROK.

Inappropriate?I agree, that switching to ALSA is NOT solution. Even if is not breaking playback, you will have problems with programs, that try to monopoly use ALSA. The best (and the hardest) way will be add PulseAudio support to Songbird, like other players do.
