Now playing feature w/o installing add-on
the ́"now" playing add on must be an integrated feature coming with the core install.

Inappropriate?Suggestions for improving the now playing list add-onn can be found here:
http://gsfn.us/t/ltz
Please give it a look.
I’m just giving a tip

Inappropriate?yeah this is such essential functionality

Inappropriate?I see no downside for things being optional. Why not an add-on? It could be installed at the first start, like others. I would love it, if like _every_ feature would be optional. I don't need the now-playing-add-on, so i don't want to have it installed! The people who need it, can install it. It's better, this way, imho. Otherwise we would have a big bloated app with a whole bunch of features someone thinks "are essential functions"...

There of course however exists a valid arguement that some particular feature is essential to functionality of a media player/library. This is the issue at stake here. If this wasn't true then why are things like FLAC support, importing an entire folder, tag editing etc. built in? -
Inappropriate?Unfortunately, George is right. I think it would be great if only my favorite add-ons could be rolled into the core, and have everything else as an add-on.
Songbird is best distributed as a basic media player, which gives the user the option to add his own personal flavor in the form of add-ons.
I wish the SB team could custom make a Songbird especially for me too, but It's just not feasible.

So Dustin, what are the criteria for a basic media player? It seems from the attention Now Playing List receives on this site and the comments on the extension profile page that a good chunk of users view it as core functionality.
Is there a defined list of criteria for SB? A process for deciding what's in and out? And updating this list?
The main issue here is that when a significantly large proportion of the user population use as core a particular addon, and it isn't updated in line with SB, then SB becomes non-functional. I realise this issues is highlighted around the 1.0 release as there was no decent release to fall back on, but users are always going to want to use (as they should) the latest release.
What about having an "Officially Supported" (or equivalent) extensions group? Extensions in this group must be updated before any SB release... -

GREAT IDEA `ll post It in your name -
Inappropriate?I am truly a supporter of Songbird being a vanilla download. I hate using software that has so many functions/features built in that I never use. Just menu after menu of crap to confuse me. If I need a feature I can very easily go to the add-on site and add the exact functionality I need.

Inappropriate? If Now Playing isn't considered a basic function of a media Player, then colour me confused after 15 years of using them, since the first Winamp. because whenever I try a new Player I'll always throw a a couple of my favourite tracks into a queue to see what happens while I play around. I only this week reinstalled SB after the 1.1.0 upgrade and it is the only player I've ever seen without a Now Playing as a core feature.
Why would you need a Now Playing on your ipod/iriver/sansa/samsung/sony DAP if it's considered an only option on your computer? Shouldn't the same logic apply?
Two main reasons for having it integrated:
1: I would guess the majority want it.
2: Extensions break eg Look at Firetray. As of 1.1.1 it's not working, Dev says he hopes to fix it in next release.... I'd prefer for vital functions to be only relying on one source to go wrong/get fixed instead of two, which may be out of sync with each other.
