On demand encoding?
With their been an MP3 encoder in the next release of songbird, would it be possible to implement a way to use this feature manually as well as it been used when transferring songs.
So for example, if a friend sent me an album in WMA id be able to change the format to mp3 from the library that way if i ever needed to bluetooth it to my phone or quickly drag on drop it onto another device i wouldn't have to wait to encode it at the time and it'd be in a format they could both read!
All the components must already be there to do this, so it must just be a case of fitting them together.

The company has not planned to implement this.

Inappropriate?Sure, that would be possible. It'd be a great addon for someone to write!
Note though that Songbird will NOT include an mp3 encoder - the license fees for including MP3 encoding support are too high (we would have to pay several dollars for each free copy of songbird that users downloaded!) -
On the road map it says License or Build? does that mean if the songbird team (or external developers) managed to build their own encoder they wouldn't have to license? -
Inappropriate?ethanjim: no, that's for the mp3 encoder that we have (for partners that want to license it - or maybe we'll have it available for sale at some point in the future?). That's just for the license on the actual code - the patent licensing (which is the super-expensive bit) there's no way to avoid.
There's no way we're going to have free mp3 encoding any time soon, sorry! -
Well if it helps to support the idea of selling it as a function, i'd pay £5-10 (and a bit on top to support songbird!) for an mp3 encoder add-on (don't know how that comes out in dollars though!) -
Even if someone cooked up an unofficial Mp3 encoder not endorsed by POTI that was available for free, but whose legality was questionable? -
Inappropriate?Andrew: we would not condone that officially, of course.
However, if the user installs any addon that provides an mp3 encoder as a gstreamer plugin, it'll automatically be available for transcoding to use. People in jurisdictions where there are no active mp3 patents should do that!
